Theater Thursday- Six

What: Six

Where: Brooks Atkinson Theatre
             256 W. 47th St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 16 and Up

Six is a retelling of the story of Henry the VIII from the point of view of his six wives, who are reclaiming their stories. It is told in the form of a rock concert. The sextet is forming a rock band and whoever can show that she had the most difficult time will get to be the lead singer. The show is fresh, original, and full of catchy songs that will get stuck in your head. The whole show is less than an hour and consists of only nine (9)  songs, but you'll wish it were much longer.

The show creators, Lucy Moss and Toby Marlow originally wrote the show for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.  The show was so popular that it returned to the Fringe Festival the following year and later debuted in the West End where it is still running in addition to playing on Broadway and on the Norwegian Cruise Line. There is also a UK Tour, and a new US Tour (the show played a pre-broadway North America tour with stops in Chicago, Illinois; Cambridge, Massachusetts, Edmonton, Canada, and St. Paul Minnesota) is currently scheduled to start in Chicago in  March of this year.

The show is extremely timely and perfect for the current age in which women (and other minorities) are regaining their power and amplifying their voices. Each of the show's queens is modeled after a combination of modern take-charge pop divas. They include Beyonce, Adele, Ariana Grande, and Alicia Keys. The actresses who play the roles handle them with equal dignity, confidence, and fervor, and they have voices as lovely as any of the singers whom their roles are modeled on.

As Moss and Marlow, are only in their twenties, there will hopefully be a lot more to come from them. We look forward to seeing what the future brings from them. In the meantime, you won't want to miss Six!
