Theater Thursday - Kimberly Akimbo

What: Kimberly Akimbo

 Where: Atlantic Theater Company
              336 W. 20th Street
              New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 12 and Up

When: Through January 15, 2022

Kimberly Akimbo is an unusual musical about an unusual girl. Kim suffers from an aging disease and although she is only a teenager she looks like a 72-year-old woman. The role is played by Tony-winning actress, Victoria Clark. She is terrific in the role and really does a  really convincing job of playing a teenage girl on the cusp of adulthood trying to find her place in the world. She is joined by a handful of other actors doing an equally impressive job playing an array of other unique and interesting characters including Steven Boyer as her alcoholic father, Alli Mauzey as her pregnant mother, and Bonnie Milligan as her unsavory aunt and more. There is a lot more to all of these characters than meets the eye. They may sound like your typical family but they are definitely not. The show has some nice but not very memorable music. It doesn't necessarily add that much to the show which was originally a play of the same name. Overall, it is a quirky and engaging show that is definitely worth seeing for the performances.

And that's our view. For more about Kimberly Akimbo or to order tickets go to atlantictheater.org/production/kimberly-akimbo/

Tune in Sunday for this week's Sunday Scoop.

What:
Head to Toe Exhibit

Where: Museum at FIT 7th Ave. & 27th St. New York, NY

Who: Teens and Up

When: Through May 8, 2022

Head to Toe, the current exhibit at the Museum at FIT is extremely comprehensive more so than the typical exhibit at the museum. In addition to the usual items like dresses, skirts, and tops, there are a lot more hats shoes, and handbags as well as numerous accessories including sunglasses, jewelry, and more. The styles range from old-fashioned bonnets and parasols to leather dresses, denim boots, and a handbag shaped like a corset, and more. The exhibit illustrates the role accessories play in fashion and how they complete a look.

If you are particularly interested in shoes The Museum at FIT has an online series completely devoted to shoes called Stilettos to Sneakers. This series includes four episodes ranging from just over 15 minutes to just under 30 minutes long focusing on footwear. It includes episodes on the shoe collection of the Museum at FIT, the Head to Toe exhibit, high heels, and sneakers. We may possibly talk more about this series in a future post.

The Museum at FIT is now open Wednesday through Friday from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Admission is free. For more information, visit www.fitnyc.edu/museum/index.php.

Tips for Tuesday - Books: Great Second Acts & Misc: Mary's Gone Crackers

We may have been given one or more of the books and/or other products listed below for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Books: Great Second Acts

Today we are recommending Great Second Acts by Marlene Wagman-Geller. Even though society often greatly underappreciates older women,  many older women have excelled and achieved great success in their later years. Ruth Gordon won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress at age 72 and was just hitting her stride then. Ruth Bader Ginsburg was still serving on the Supreme Court in her 80s. Sister Megan Good was leading protests against nuclear weapons in her 80s. These women are only a small sample of the amazing women covered in this book. The book is chock full of the true stories of incredible women whose lives and achievements will inspire you. If you want proof that not only is there no cutoff age for women's success but that women can definitely attain greatness in numerous fields in their later years, you will want to read this book.

Misc: Mary's Gone Crackers

Today we are talking about Mary's Gone Crackers.  If you are looking for a healthier snack option, you might want to give these crackers s a try. They are plant-based, organic, gluten-free, and non-GMO. They come in several different flavors including  Olive Oil + Black Pepper, Tomato + Basil, Herb, and Sea Salt. The flavors vary in intensity but none of the flavors are too overwhelming. If you are looking for healthy crackers with just a hint of flavor, you might enjoy these.

For more information about Mary's Gone Crackers or to purchase some, visit https://www.marysgonecrackers.com.

And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.

Winter Break vs Spring Break

Me- I love Spring break not only because it's time off, but because it's warm so I can go outside. I don't really like Winter break. I like that I get to be off. I don't like that it's cold. Most of the time, I just sit inside under a blanket. During, Spring break I don't have that problem, and I can go outside. Also, more places are open so there are more options of what you can do during Spring break then during Winter break. What I do like about Winter break is that during Winter break, it's New Year's so we get to start off new with a New Year. What I don't like about any break is that since it's time off, it's time where we have to get stuff done around the house like cleaning my room. I hate having to do that! The thing I like best about Spring break and Winter break is getting to spend time with my family!

Mom - It's been a long time since I've been in school and had a Spring break or a Winter break, but I do remember the excitement of both. The nice thing about Winter break is that when it's cold out you can stay home in your pajamas all day and not feel guilty about it. During Spring break the weather is usually nicer, and you can go outside more. Winter break always seems longer and usually is. Spring break does by quicker even in the years when both breaks are the same amount of time.  After Winter break, there is still half of the school year left, and it goes by slowly especially when it is a particularly cold winter. After Spring break, the rest of the school year goes by so fast. I love the summer but every time the summer comes and my kids are another school year older, I just keep thinking that my kids are growing up so fast. It makes me kind of sad.

And that's our view.  Do you prefer Winter Break or Spring Break?

Tune in tomorrow for Tips for Tuesday.

Brandon and Abel, two very different guys, met in an online fanfiction group devoted to their favorite sci-fi TV show, Castaway Planet. During a weekend adventure that changes everything, the guys—along with Brandon’s best friend and nerd skeptic, Bec—hit the road in an RV to attend a fan convention for Cast- away Planet. Along the way, Brandon and Abel uncover secrets about each other, spar with an online community of fanfiction writers, meet their TV idols, and maybe possibly fall in love. But as Brandon’s conservative upbringing and Abel’s painful romantic past conspire to keep them apart, the two have to find a way to repair their own hearts—and each other’s.

THE SEEING PLACE THEATER is pleased to announce their production of Margaret Edson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, WIT, directed by Brynn Asha WalkerWIT will play a three-week limited engagement at The Seeing Place at The Paradise Factory (64 East 4th Street, NYC 10003). Performances begin Thursday, December 30, 2021 and continue through Sunday, January 16, 2022. Opening Night is Sunday, January 2 (2 p.m.).  Tickets are $25-$35 and are available at www.TheSeeingPlace.com.  Press are invited to all performances.

Margaret Edson's powerfully imagined Pulitzer Prize-winning play examines what makes life worth living through her exploration of one of existence's unifying experiences ― mortality ― while she also probes the vital importance of human relationships.

Vivian Bearing, Ph.D., a renowned professor of English who has spent years studying and teaching the brilliant and difficult metaphysical sonnets of John Donne, has been diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer. Her approach to the study of Donne, and her cancer, is aggressively probing, intensely rational. But during the course of her illness—and her stint as a prize patient in an experimental chemotherapy program at a major teaching hospital—Vivian comes to reassess her life and her work with a profundity and humor that are transformative both for her and the audience.

In this carefully crafted stylized rendition from The Seeing Place Theater two of the performers have their own unique experiences with Cancer. Erin Cronican (Vivian Bearing, PhD) is currently battling Stage 4 (metastatic) Breast Cancer. She was diagnosed with this terminal disease on November 6, 2018. She's on weekly systemic chemo under the care of doctors at Mount Sinai Hospital. Robin Friend (Dr. Jason Posner) is a Testicular Cancer Survivor, who was diagnosed and treated in early-mid 2021.

The Seeing Place Theater works to inspire audiences to "social justice action" by using the themes of its plays to educate and incite change, particularly for women, LGBTQIA+, Global Majority (BIPOC), immigrants, and the disabled/those with chronic illnesses. Working with members of the community and empowering their voices is an important component of their work. In addition to Edson’s membership in the LGBTQIA+ community, members of the company include Brynn Asha Walker (Susie Monahan, RN) who is a Trans actress bringing an interesting layer of complexity to the patriarchal "office politics" routinely seen in medicine. (She is also the caregiver to Cronican whom she married in August 2021). Brynn is also a member of the Global Majority (BIPOC). Christopher James Murray (Dr. Kelekian, and others) is both a member or the LGBTQIA+ community and the Global Majority (BIPOC).

WIT plays the following regular schedule through Sunday, January 16:

 Wednesdays at 7 p.m.

 Thursdays at 7 p.m.

 Fridays at 7 p.m.

 Saturdays at 7 p.m.
