A Commercial Jingle for Regina Comet, the first completely new musical to premiere at an off-Broadway venue since the shutdown began, released today a composer’s demo lyric video of “One Hit Song”.

Written and performed by the show’s creators Alex Wyse (“Indoor Boys”, Spring Awakening) and Ben Fankhauser (Newsies, Beautiful), “One Hit Song” comes at the beginning of the show with two jingle composers down on their luck, stuck with writer’s block, and figuring out how to write the one song to launch them to fame... or infamy. A Commercial Jingle for Regina Comet begins previews on Friday, September 17th, at the DR2 Theatre (103 E. 15th Street), with an opening night set for Monday, September 27th. The strictly limited engagement is set to run through Sunday, November 14th, 2021.

The show will play the following schedule: Tuesdays at 7pm, Wednesdays at 7pm, Thursdays at 8pm, Fridays at 8pm, Saturdays at 3pm and 8pm, and Sundays at 3pm and 7pm.

Two New Public Artworks This Fall:

Art Installation Murmuration by SO – IL

Opening September 10, 2021

Artpark & Company unveils two new public artworks: an interactive installations Murmuration by SO – IL studio, and a mural Unity in Diversity by Muhammad Z Zaman. Both pieces will be on display, free and open to the public beginning Friday, September 10, 2021 at 6:30pm. 

Murmuration is designed by the Brooklyn-based architectural firm SO-IL led by internationally acclaimed architects Florian Idenburg and Jing Liu, Ted Baab, Andrew Gibbs, and Ray Rui Wu. Located on the lawn by the lower entrance of the park, the 25 foot high, 100’ by 80’ footprint Murmuration is the largest scale installation at Artpark since Omega by Owen Morel in 1980. It consists of a constellation of metal frames suspended from six poles and wrapped in agricultural netting, giving the installation its distinct shape. The sculptural arrangement aims to evoke the form of a bird murmuration, a flock of birds momentarily suspended in midair. The canopy is interspersed with seating perches and other playful elements designed to encourage conversations, observation, and awareness around biodiversity, extinction, and cohabitation. Visitors are invited to perch alongside the birds in this outdoor mesh canopy. A sculptural pavilion, in its title and concept, Murmuration directly advocates for conservation efforts for birds, reflecting on the loss of billions in recent decades and the terms this loss has for our future environment. Murmuration is a gifted installation from the SO-IL studio and was recently migrated from its original location at the High Museum in Atlanta to its new home at Artpark. The installation of Murmuration at Artpark is funded by Charles E. and Mary A. Bauer Foundation and members of Artpark & Company Board of Directors.

Artparks’ other public artwork this fall is Muhammad Z Zaman’s Unity in Diversity, a weaving colorful pathway using a unique calligraphic style. The carpet-like painting traverses the lower parking lot from the South 4th Street entrance towards the box office, inviting the visitors to walk safely and with a sense of wonder. Buffalo, NY-based Zaman is the 2021 Summer Artist-in-Residence as part of the Artpark Works program funded by John R. Oishei Foundaiton and KeyBank in partnership with First Niagara Foundation, specializing in urban art and calligraffiti. His script is deeply inspired by ancient practices while incorporating modern and urban techniques and influences. He weaves a unique narrative that uses elements from each of three languages that have significant personal meaning – English, Bangla, and Arabic. Bangla is his first language as a native of Bangladesh, English is the language of his time in the U.S., and Arabic is the language of his Islamic religion. He quotes Afro-American poet Audre Lorde: “It is not our differences that divide us, it is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.” Similarly, Unity in Diversity is an invitation of hope that humanity will be stronger with mutual connection and inclusiveness. The curiosity this painting elucidates is a non-familiar kind of reading. Its built-in, semi-familiarity, combined with layer upon layer upon layer of joyful colors and patterns shows the importance of mutual respect, despite the seeming impossibility of communicating or understanding each other.

Artpark & Company continues SONIC TRAILS, a visionary series of free site-reactive audio experiences presented in a mobile app designed by The Holladay Brothers in collaboration with major BIPOC voices: Rhiannon Giddens with Yo-Ma, DJ Spooky, Kronos Quartet, the Holladay Brothers and recordings of local indigenous artists curated by Michele-Elise Burnett. Each of the five experiences is curated and co-produced by Sozo Creative. The FREE app and site-activated sound experience takes the visitors on five distinct journeys on Artpark’s trails connecting them with the Niagara land, unique geology and legacy. Covid-19 Protocols

Arts On Site is enforcing COVID-19 restrictions. Each performance is located in Arts on Site’s large space, Studio 3R, with an air filter. The stage is set up in a proscenium style with a clear division between the artist and the audience. Seating is limited and the front row of seating is set at least 10 feet from the stage. Additional safety measures include:

• Limited occupancy at each event, with only 34 audience members total at one time
• Hand hygiene stations provided on site
• Requirements that audience members are masked and performers be vaccinated
• Signage posted throughout the location to remind personnel and visitors to adhere to proper hygiene practices, use PPE appropriately, and follow disinfection protocols
• Designation of a site safety monitor whose responsibilities include continuous compliance with all aspects of the site safety plan
• Only selling tickets online only prior to the event, with no tickets sold at the door

 

All visitors are required to:

• Arrive at least 15 minutes before performance (6:15 & 8:15pm)
• Complete COVID-19 questionnaire (listed below)

4) Asase Yaa School of the Arts Announces 10th Anniversary with

         2021-22 Arts Outreach In-Person Program in Four Brooklyn Schools

The Asase Yaa School of the Arts has announced its 10th Anniversary and 2021-22 Arts Outreach program will launch at four Brooklyn schools beginning September 13, 2021.The schools, which include one elementary, two middle schools, and one high school are: Van Siclen Community School (George Gershwin Junior High School) 800 Van Siclen Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11207, MS 250 (West Side Collaborative Middle School) 735 West End Ave, New York, NY 10025, UAMA (Urban Assembly School of Music and Art) 49 Flatbush Ave Ext, Brooklyn, NY 1120, PS 224755 Wortman Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11208. Their Arts Outreach classes comprise Djembe drum and drumline classes, along with African, Jazz, Hip Hop, Afro beat, and contemporary modern dance classes. They also offer classes in theater production, choir ensembles, and Visual Arts. The 45-60-minute classes are custom tailored for each school and run throughout the full calendar school year.

In addition, Asase Yaa has announced it will resume in-person and virtual learning for its School of the Arts Dance and Drum Program in the Fall of 2021. The school’s highly regarded program offers intensive study and technical training in drums and dance forms that include tap, jazz, ballet, hip hop, modern, and African to boys and girls ages 3 -18. Courses for the 37-week in-person program will start on September 25th and end in June 2022. The 2022 school year also marks the 20th Anniversary (2022-23) of the school’s umbrella organization, the non-profit Asase Yaa Cultural Arts Foundation, which has been serving minority communities throughout Brooklyn over the past two decades.

In the aftermath of the Napoleonic wars, a shy English spinster seeks to win back the love of the man she jilted eight years before.  Jane Austen's last and most romantic novel, PERSUASION first appeared in print in 1818, and is a meditation on love and loss, and what is constant in a changing world.

 

Performances of BEDLAM’s World Premiere of PERSUASION begin Saturday, September 11, 2021, at The Connelly Theater (220 East Fourth Street), opening Tuesday, September 21, for a limited 7-week engagement.

2021-2022 Season

Beth Morrison Projects (BMP) is proud to announce their 16th season, with global, national, and regional premieres alongside revivals across the U.S. and Europe throughout 2021-22. BMP continues to lead the opera industry into the future, changing the perception of new works, diversifying the field, and bringing new relevance to the art form.

BMP has also launched a newly updated visual identity and logo, as well as a freshly re-designed website experience.

The season includes Book of Mountains and Seas having its world premiere at the Royal Danish Opera House, and United States premiere at the PROTOTYPE Festival in New York, with music and libretto by Huang Ruo and featuring Ars Nova (Copenhagen), this is a work of vocal-theatre inspired by ancient Chinese compilation of early myths; the interactive art song recital, 21c. Liederabend featuring a tactile object that the audience will interact with throughout the performance, designed by Kathryn Hamilton; the world premiere of Trade a psychological portrait on duty, morality, and desire, and a commission of BMP’s Next Generation Competition winner Emma O’Halloran; the west-coast premiere of PLACE, an examination of the complex consequences of a rupture in the place we call home through a piece that fuses meditation and confrontation, with music by Ted Hearne and words by Saul Williams and Ted Hearne, and produced by BMP in collaboration with the L.A. Philharmonic; the world premiere of Du Yun’s In Our Daughter’s Eyes, a one-man opera exploring the journey of the protagonist as he wrestles with truly becoming a man that his daughter would be proud of; a revival performance of Geoff Sobelle’s HOME, a large-scale performance work with original songs by Elvis Perkins that combines dance, illusion, live music, home-spun engineering, and an inventive use of audience interaction to compose a work that asks, where is home?;  a revival performance of new music-theatre work, Aging Magician, a composite co-creation by Paola Prestini, Rinde Eckert, and Julian Crouch, of sonic and visual elements that paints an allegory on time, youth, and the peculiar magic of ordinary life, and, perhaps, the ordinary magic of a peculiar life; an evening of commissioned Song Cycles by Yaz Lancaster, Tamar-Kali Brown, and Tanyaradzwa Tawengwa-nzou Mambano showcasing diverse musical languages from electro-acoustic, rock-infused, to Zimbabwean folk inspired; and finally BMP: Next Gen program, Round 2, world premieres of two one-act vocal works by selected finalists Niloufar Nourbakhsh and Elizabeth Gartman.

World Premiere Royal Danish Opera House November 3-7, 2021 Book of Mountains and Seas is a work of vocal-theatre for 12 singers, two percussionists, and large-scale puppetry. It is inspired by the ancient Chinese compilation of early myths of the same title, which was first transcribed in 4th century B.C. Over the years, these mythological stories have become part of Chinese written and oral history, shifted and reshaped to match contemporary times. Book of Mountains and Seas is a 21st-century adaptation through the lens of our modern-day relationship with the natural world. The creation stories conjure a sense of respect and awe for the environment and the water stories challenge us to be good stewards of the natural resources we have been given. 21c. Liederabend National Sawdust December 15-16, 2021 After three critically acclaimed New York festivals in 2009, 2011, and 2013 at Galapagos, The Kitchen, and BAM Next Wave Festival respectively, and a west coast Liederabend with the LA Phil,  BMP and National Sawdust are creating an audience-interactive, sensorial Liederabend for our time.  An expansive re-imagining of the traditional art song recital, this 21c Liederabend combines leading contemporary composers with world-class librettists, and the art work of Kathryn Hamilton.  Audiences will delight their senses with objects that are matched to each song, including sparkly fortune cookies, pine needles, art work to stitch together and much more. Trade  World Premiere PROTOTYPE Festival January 8-16, 2022 Scored for two principal singers, ten instrumentalists and electronics, Trade tells the story of two men in working-class Dublin, both trapped within their own lives. Set in a cheap hotel room, Older Man has solicited Young Man for a sexual encounter, a ritual that has happened many times before. Older Man is trapped by his marriage, his sexuality, and his deepening feelings for Young Man. Young Man is trapped by his need for money to support a young baby. In this dingy hotel room, they wrestle with their own inner demons and their need for each other.   A piece about duty, morality, and desire, Trade is the full-length commission awarded to emerging composer Emma O’Halloran as winner of BMP’s Next Generation Competition. In Our Daughter's Eyes

World Premiere LA Opera "Off Grand" at REDCAT April 13, 14, 16, & 17, 2022 Told through the perspective of a new father, In Our Daughter’s Eyes shows the Hero’s journey as he wrestles with truly becoming a man that his daughter would be proud of. He imparts passages from the journal he keeps -- a gift for his unborn daughter -- as the moments of this journey unfold before him.  The story traces his wife's joyful and fraught pregnancy, the legacy of the family's past, and his personal demons that he vows to vanquish before assuming the role of a father.  Along the way, mounting complications take the story through unexpected and sobering turns that test our flawed hero as he discovers a strength of self and purpose that he never imagined possible. This moving and heartfelt one-man opera reunites Pulitzer Prize winning composer Du Yun, Beth Morrison Projects, and multidisciplinary librettist & director Michael Joseph McQuilken after their lauded co-creation of the Pulitzer-prize winning opera, Angel’s Bone.

University Musical Society, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor April 22 & 23, 2022 HOME is a large-scale performance work that explores and explodes the relationship between “House” and “Home.” A visual physical spectacle, HOME combines dance, illusion, live music, home-spun engineering, and an inventive use of audience interaction to compose a work that asks, where is home? If it is not a place, what is home? In the face of entropy, we struggle to build infra- structure, family, community, art. We fail, and we try again. ​ HOME aims to awaken us to current housing dilemmas, local and global. The universal and timely themes of gentrification and migration are rendered in the choreography of ordinary people inhabiting a structure, leaving that structure through a variety of social, political, personal, and aesthetic forces, replacing one another, repeating. The project seeks to use the house of the theater as a lens through which we might see the impact of these forces at work: the illusion of home; the transitory nature of dwelling; the constraints of time and money; the impossible structural demands of a house; the absurdity, and at times the impossibility, of trying to make a house a home.

Aging Magician

May 13 & 14, 2022 San Diego Opera A new music-theatre work, Aging Magician is a composite of sonic and visual elements that paints an allegory on time, youth, and the peculiar magic of ordinary life, and, perhaps, the ordinary magic of a peculiar life. Accompanied by a string quartet and a choir of young people, Aging Magician moves us along with Harold from the surgical repair of a timepiece to the magic show of time itself, lives and deaths, appearances and disappearances. The man’s vibrant last adventure is brought to life by a team of multidisciplinary artists who combine music, theatre, puppetry, instrument making, and scenic design to create an enduring work for the stage.   This work features vocalist Rinde Eckert, original musical instruments by Mark Stewart, and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus and string quartet.

World premieres of two one-act vocal works by selected finalists NILOUFAR NOURBAKHSH and ELIZABETH GARTMAN NYC / Location TBA Spring 2022 Featuring CONTEMPORANEOUS Discover the most exciting new voices in opera and music-theatre. First launched in 2017-18, the BMP: Next Gen program was established to help BMP stay connected to a new generation of composers, singers and artists just coming out of school. Aspiring composers from coast to coast are invited to submit vocal works up to ten minutes in length. BMP Creative Producer Beth Morrison and Executive Director Jecca Barry select ten first-round finalists from these applicants and then produce an evening of new music out of these submissions. Two composers are then chosen by a panel of invited professionals in the field for a second-round competition, returning the following year to each showcase a new and original 30-minute work. Ultimately, one of these two finalists will receive a commission for an evening-length work, including the development and World Premiere production of their project.

 Republic Records and Apple Original Films have teamed up with Deaf West Theatre (David Kurs, Artistic Director) to release the official music video for the single “You’re All I Need To Get By (Duet Version)” from the CODA “Soundtrack from the Apple Original Film” today. The performance of the Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell classic song is sung by “CODA”’s lead actress Emilia Jones (Locke & Key, Doctor Who) & co-star Ferdia Walsh-Peelo (Sing Street, Vikings), as featured in the film now playing in select theaters and streaming on Apple TV+.

10) 6th ANNUAL INDIE STREET FILM FESTIVAL ADDS WORKHORSE QUEEN DOCUMENTARY WITH APPEARANCE BY MRS. KASHA DAVIS, AND OTHER SPECIAL GUEST APPEARANCES AND EVENTS

 

The Indie Street Film Festival (ISFF) has announced it will add feature documentary WorkHorse Queen, and the film’s star, drag queen Mrs. Kasha Davis will introduce the film with a brief performance. Directed by Angela Washko, Workhorse Queen tells the story of telemarketing manager by day and drag queen by night, Ed Popil, who finds his life changed forever after being cast on “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” 

The festival will open on Wednesday, September 8th at 7pm in-person with ALIEN ON STAGE, directed by UK-based filmmakers Danielle Kummer and Lucy Harvey, to be screened at the festival’s Drive-In at Fort Monmouth (Expo Theater, Avenue of Memories, Eatontown). On Friday, September 10 at 7pm at the Fort Monmouth Drive-In, ISFF will be screening 2 documentaries about fierce female-only teams in unique arenas.  QUEENS OF PAIN, directed by Cassie Hay and Amy Winston, about an all-female roller derby league in New York, preceded by short documentary film THE MISSFITS by Ellie Wen, about an all-female robot building team. The filmmakers of Queens of Pain will be in attendance to provide a live intro.

The 6th Indie Street Film Festival continues its mission to connect the diverse communities of NJ around impactful stories and art, returning in person at various Red Bank locations from September 8-13th, 2021 and virtually offering films September 13-19, 2021. But upon re-reading the original so many things are exactly the same, that I have changed my mind. There is still great poverty and hunger,  and the heartbreak of lost love never changes. Add to that a world-wide pandemic and a masked society, and Boucicault's 18th century world seems to fit right into our 21st with its darkness and restrictions. But, as always,  I love the end of our story. It's filled with hope and the victory of the power of good. One day soon we will surely be headed in that light-filled direction.

The Company will perform its in-person, indoor performance of Red Firecrackers, a fantastic production telling the story of the first Chinese Lunar New Year, a dance extravaganza for the entire family.

The Company will appear with up-and-coming Asian American artists in the eighth annual CrossCurrent Festival, an ongoing initiative focused on developing a diverse audience for Asian American dancers and choreographers.

The Imagine Ellis Island Festival, Ellis Island, NY

In the Great Hall of Immigration, 

The Company will celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, presenting the sixth Imagine Ellis Island AAPI Heritage Festival. The Festival brings together a diverse array of artists who are focused on preserving and creating culturally specific and cross cultural work.

Between touring dates,, the Company will continue its residency at the New Jersey City University in Jersey City, NJ with extensive community activities including dance curriculum planning, teaching and rehearsing, research and choreography. The Company is especially proud of its award winning program at the A Harry Moore School for children with multiple disabilities where the dancers are collaborating with therapists and teachers to create a uniquely creative dance curriculum for a population of 100 students from pre-K to 12th grade. This year, with strong support from the NJ State Council on the Arts, the Company will begin a new residency at NJ Regional Day Schools, expanding the program to include students with Autism.

Followers and audience members can gain an early glimpse of the Company's new works during their open rehearsal sessions and at Flushing Town Hall in New York; at NJPAC in Newark, and as well as at pop-up locations around the NY/NJ area to be announced on the Company’s e-newsletter.

In addition to developing new dances, Nai-Ni Chen is equally committed to introducing the Chinese American heritage to children and families in diverse communities. The Company’s K-12 assembly program The Art of Chinese Dance is performed throughout the year in schools and community centers in Connecticut, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

Due to the overwhelming response for Pixar Putt’s After Dark sessions for 18+, additional times have been added to Thursday nights from 7:00 PM until 10:00 PM (last entry is 8:30 PM) beginning this week. Pixar Putt will run in Battery Park City until October 31, 2021.

Ragamala Dance Company’s Fires of Varanasi: Dance of the Eternal Pilgrim, September 11-12, 2021 has its world premiere at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts REACH campus in Washington, D.C. The performance marks the start of the Ragamala 2021-22 season. Rooted in the expansive South Indian classical dance form of Bharatanatyam, Ragamala Dance

Company manifests a kindred relationship between the ancient and the contemporary, embodying the South Asian immigrant story through their artistry. In this site-specific evening co-commissioned by the Kennedy Center and designed by the Artistic Directors for the REACH campus eleven dancers conjure a realm where time is suspended and humans merge with the divine.

The award-winning mother/daughter creative team of Ranee Ramaswamy and Aparna Ramaswamy imagine a metaphorical crossing place that enters into a ritualistic world of immortality, evoking the birth-death-rebirth continuum in Hindu thought to honor immigrant experiences of life and death in the diaspora. Pulling from the sacred history of Varanasi, India, Fires of Varanasi honors the death of the choreographers’ grandfather away from his homeland. French scenic and lighting designer Willy Cessa transforms the stage by recreating the iconic stairways, landings, and waters of the Ganges River within the city of Varanasi. 

The performances are part of the Center’s 50^th Anniversary celebration weekends and Millennium Stage Summer Series, Throughout the weekend, the community can also participate in a range of other free activities, including yoga, , dance sanctuaries, and more.
