Theater Thursday - Ghost Quartet

What: Ghost Quartet

Where: Dave Malloy's YouTube page at www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJSaEJm8pCE&t=1106s

Who: Teens and Up

Ghost Quartet is a music cycle written by Dave Malloy of Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 fame.  A full production of the musical that was produced at the McKittrick Hotel in New York City on January 12, 2015, is available for viewing on Dave Malloy's YouTube channel. The show consists of four interwoven stories. The most interesting of them involves a girl named Roxie haunted by the ghost of her dead sister who wants Roxie to joy her in heaven,   It can be somewhat confusing to keep track of all the different stories or sometimes even to know what is going on at all especially if you are not familiar with the show. From time to time, there are spoken parts that do help clarify what is happening at least in that particular moment. Most of the show is sung-through, however, and is harder to keep track of what is going on when they are singing. The music is kind of haunting sometimes in a pretty way, but at other times in more of a dark and sinister but perfectly appropriate for a ghost story way. If you are familiar with Natasha, Pierre, there is definitely a recognizable quality to the music. Of course, the fun of that show was experiencing it live. Perhaps, it is the same for this show although it is still fascinating to listen to.
