2) Pandemic Streaming Hit Adds More Live Performances
BETTE DAVIS AIN’T FOR SISSIES
Now thru December 17, 2020 on Stellar

Internationally acclaimed one woman show BETTE DAVIS AIN’T FOR SISSIES  has been one of the success stories of the pandemic era. Just before COVID lockdowns began, writer/performer Jessica Sherr was in negotiations for the official Off-Broadway debut of her touring show. Her first livestream of BETTE DAVIS AIN’T FOR SISSIES on April 3rd via Facebook proved that there was interest in Davis and watching solo performances from home. Sherr has now performed the show live from her apartment over 20 times, attracting audiences from 20 states and 6 countries globally. She was even able to do nearly a dozen live performances in Central Park for small, socially distanced and masked audiences this summer.  She has now added more live streaming performances through December 17th.

In BETTE DAVIS AIN’T FOR SISSIES, Sherr channels 31-year old Bette Davis’ fight against the male-dominated studio system.  On the night of the 1939 Oscars, Bette Davis returns home knowing she's to lose Best Actress to Vivien Leigh's Scarlet O'Hara, because the press has leaked the winners.  Davis takes us on the bumpy ride of her tumultuous rise, as the tenacious actress fights her way through the studio system to the top. Witness Bette triumph over misogyny to win roles and compensation on par with her male counterparts. See what happens when someone who always wins...loses.

Written and performed by Jessica Sherr (Blue Bloods, Annie, Claws), BETTE DAVIS AIN’T FOR SISSIES is directed by Karen Carpenter (Harry Townsend’s Last Stand, Love Loss and What I Wore).  It will be performed live on Stellar November 19 – December 17, Thursdays at 7:30pm. Tickets are $19.50 each, available at www.bettedavisaintforsissies.com.

4) BROADWAY ADVOCACY COALITION

AND COLUMBIA LAW SCHOOL ANNOUNCE

COURSE FOCUSED ON BRIDGING ARTISTRY AND NATIONAL CALL TO RETHINK POLICING AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM

The Theater of Change: Reimagining Justice Through Abolition

Winter 2021 – Spring 2021

Artist Applications Now Open

The Broadway Advocacy Coalition (BAC) and Columbia Law School will continue their multi-year partnership with the announcement of the first full semester course offering entitled The Theater for Change: Reimagining Justice Through Abolition.

Applications are now open to participants from any artistic discipline interested in learning how to use their own skills and expertise for social change. The course will run from January 21, 2021 through April 8, 2021. Participants will be compensated for participation in this course.

The course blends artistry, law, policy, and community engagement to produce powerful artistic projects with the potential to change the broken criminal justice system and imagine new ways forward. Amidst resounding calls to abolish the current state of the country’s criminal legal system, notably prisons and the police, the arts provides a critical space to imagine alternatives and promote those ideas as achievable realities. The semester will focus on issues of abolition, reimagining justice and strengthening communities. It will be informed by the expertise of community leaders with extensive experience both fighting and feeling the effects of these systems.

Artists will join forces with law students and community advocates to create performance pieces that envision a path to abolition and strategize how and where these performances can occur to achieve sustainable impact. The course will also build artistic capacity to merge high quality, high impact, rigorous artistry with community narratives, policy analysis and effective policy advocacy. The goals of this course are not only to facilitate an exchange of ideas across disciplines, but to form lasting partnerships that can continue to generate game-changing work into the future.

To apply, please visit https://www.bwayadvocacycoalition.org/application.

Applications will be processed beginning December 6, 2020 and participants will be selected and informed by late December 2020.

An informational session will be held on Tuesday, November 24th from 6:30-7:30pm EST. Participation is encouraged but not required for artists interested in the course. RSVP for the informational session via this form.

10) KINO LORBER TO RELEASE
THE JEWISH SOUL:
CLASSICS OF YIDDISH CINEMA
ON BLU-RAY NOVEMBER 24
FEATURING NEW TRANSLATIONS BY
WRITER/ACTOR/DIRECTOR ALLEN LEWIS RICKMAN

Kino Lorber’s long-awaited Blu-ray of THE JEWISH SOUL: CLASSICS OF YIDDISH CINEMA is set for release next Tuesday, November 24th. With new translations by noted Yiddish cultural historian, actor (the Coen Brothers’ A SERIOUS MAN, “Boardwalk Empire”), playwright, and translator Allen Lewis Rickman, the five-disc set will include ten classics of Yiddish cinema along with an abundance of bonus features.

The films include THE DYBBUK; TEVYA (starring Maurice Schwartz, based on the Sholem Aleichem stories which inspired the legendary musical FIDDLER ON THE ROOF); AMERICAN MATCHMAKER; HER SECOND MOTHER; MIR KUMEN ON; OVERTURE TO GLORY; ELI ELI; JEWISH KING LEAR; MOTEL, THE OPERATOR; and THREE DAUGHTERS. The Blu-ray extras will include audio commentaries, alternate versions and a printed booklet including essays by journalist and historian Samuel Blumenfeld, film preservationist Serge Bromberg and Allen Lewis Rickman.

During its heyday in the late 1930s, Yiddish movies covered a broad range of genres: Comedies, soap operas, the supernatural, literary adaptations, musicals, and Lubitsch-style romances. Unified through language, gesture and a common cultural sensibility, they captured the essence of the Jewish soul. This lavish box set captures the diversity of Yiddish film and encourages a better appreciation of this most fascinating, but rarely viewed genre. The ten features in the collection were restored by Lobster Films, the result of an unprecedented collaboration between the Museum of Modern Art, the Deutsche Kinemathek and the Filmoteka Narodowa in Warsaw.

Allen Lewis Rickman directed, co-translated and starred (along with Shane Baker and Yelena Shmulenson) in 2018 in the unanimously acclaimed TEVYE SERVED RAW Off-Broadway. An original take on the work of Sholem Aleichem, the production went on to play in Romania at the State Jewish Theater in Bucharest, and the cast performed a selection from it at Carnegie Hall in the concert FROM SHTETL TO STAGE. Allen adapted and directed the revival of Leon Kobrin’s THE LADY NEXT DOOR, the most successful straight-play production (“Delightful” -- NY Times) presented by the Folksbiene in decades. More recently he co-adapted, directed and wrote supertitle translations for the Folksbiene’s Drama Desk-nominated Yiddish PIRATES OF PENZANCE, and directed his own musical CHRISTMAS AT THE SMALL EMPIRE for Centenary Stage. He is also an internationally produced playwright and his work has been presented in six languages. His co-written farce OFF THE HOOK was published in French in L’Avant-Scene Theatre, and his revue THE ESSENCE: A YIDDISH THEATER DIM SUM has toured widely and was published in an anthology co-edited by the late Harvey Pekar.

13) THE ROUSTABOUTS THEATRE CO.
PRESENTS
THE WORLD PREMIERE OF
'ROOSEVELT: CHARGE THE BEAR’
BY MARNI FREEDMAN AND PHIL JOHNSON
STARRING PHIL JOHNSON

FILMED FOR STREAMING ONLINE
AVAILABLE ON-DEMAND THROUGH DECEMBER 13

DIRECTED BY ROSINA REYNOLDS

The Roustabouts Theatre Co. is presenting the world premiere of Roosevelt: Charge the Bear by Marni Freedman and Phil Johnson, starring Mr. Johnson in a virtual filmed presentation as part of their fourth season. As theatres all across the world are adapting to current conditions, many are moving their presentations to filmed productions online. _Roosevelt: Charge the Bear is the second historically-based offering penned by Freedman and Johnson. Their critically and publicly-acclaimed dramedy, A Jewish Joke, played to sold-out houses Off Broadway, in San Diego, and across the United States. Roosevelt: Charge the Bear_ is available on-demand through December 13. Tickets are available at theroustabouts.org.

Phil Johnson stars in this new one-man show about President Theodore Roosevelt, one of the most fascinating people of the 20th century. In this gripping 90-minute show, the new president grapples with the issues that would define his term: taking on the trusts, trying to get his message across to the people, and his colossal challenge - the coal strike of 1902. Miners and others were killed, tensions were high, and --- the biggest threat of all --- innocent people were at risk of freezing to death that winter. This American president dealt with these in his own relentless energetic way. He was a great man, a great American, and Johnson brings this multi-faceted character to life in a truly riveting, energetic, and passionate performance.

In addition, The Roustabouts are offering a Main Stage virtual presentation of No Way Back, by Mahshid Fashandi Hager, starring Jessica John and directed by Fran Gercke. No Way Back is the true story of 10-year old Mahshid and her family’s desperate escape out of Iran in 1981, as her country is cast into revolution, turmoil, and war. Her family’s secret escape out of the country will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last scene.

THE SOUTHWARK PLAYHOUSE

PRODUCTION OF

JASON ROBERT BROWN’S

AWARD-WINNING MUSICAL

THE LAST FIVE YEARS

THIS THANKSGIVING WEEKEND

NOVEMBER 26 – 29, 2020

Broadway On Demand, the theater-focused streaming platform, is proud to present the first-ever streamed production of Jason Robert Brown’s Drama Desk Award-winning musical, The Last Five Years, recorded live at the Southwark Playhouse, for five performances only this Thanksgiving weekend, Thursday, November 26 – Sunday, November 29 only on Broadway On Demand.

The Last Five Years is an emotionally powerful and intimate show about two New Yorkers who fall in and out of love over the course of five years. The two characters meet only once, at their wedding in the middle of the show. Now, this iconic musical returns in a bold new actor-musician production with the actors on stage at all times and playing the piano to add a new narrative dimension to the story, accompanied by a four-piece band. The cast features Molly Lynch (Cathy) and Oli Higginson (Jamie) with musicians Elaine AmbridgeRyan Webber, and Andy Crick.

TOULOUSE-LAUTREC
Now through January 10, 2021

Bated Breath Theatre Company will extend performances of its live hit VOYEUR: THE WINDOWS OF TOULOUSE-LAUTREC through January 10, 2021.

VOYEUR is an open air, immersive theatrical experience that guides an intimate eight-person audience through the dreams of iconic artist Toulouse-Lautrec as he recalls his final absinthe-laced years living and working in Montmartre. It is a unique blend of theater, dance, art, walking tour, live music and puppetry. The sidewalks, doorways and windows of Greenwich Village become the setting for VOYEUR as live accompaniment collides with the city’s soundscape, transporting attendees into the bohemian world of 1899 Paris.

In an effort to maintain additional safety during the Covid-19 pandemic, audience members will be required to wear a mask at all times and maintain a safe social distance for the duration of the performance. Hand sanitizing stations will be available at stops throughout the tour. This immersive performance is hosted primarily outdoors, with one short venture indoors into a spacious atmosphere capable of safe social distancing. A flexible ticket exchange policy will be offered to those who may feel ill in order to facilitate responsible event participation. Audience members are asked to check local weather forecasts and dress accordingly.

VOYEUR: THE WINDOWS OF TOULOUSE-LAUTREC runs September 30, 2020 – January 10, 2021. The performance begins at The Duplex, 61 Christopher Street at 7th Avenue South. Performance dates and times vary. See web site for complete schedule. Running time is approximately 1 hour. Audience members must be able to climb stairs and be on their feet for the duration of the performance. Tickets are $75 for General Admission or $84 including a pre-show, themed cocktail. Visit www.unmakinglautrecplay.com for times, tickets and further details.
