Asuka is a celebration of the music of Celia Cruz through the lens of the Latino experience. Through rich imagery and humor, Eduardo Vilaro explores the struggles of departure from one's homeland and the exuberance of success experienced by a community.
World Premiere: December 17, 2011 at the Apollo Theater
Asuka was commissioned in part by Goya Foods in celebration of their 75th Anniversary, by Gaily and John Beinecke, and by the University of Notre Dame's DeBartolo Performing Arts Center.

Bury Me Standing (1998)

The unique culture of the Gypsy or "Roma" people, a marginalized community that has journeyed across continents for thousands of years, inspire Spanish choreographer Ramón Oller to create Bury Me Standing. The compelling rhythms and melodies which accompany the ballet reflect the emotional essence of the Roma: their strong communal bonds, sensuality, feelings of oppression and longing, and their strength and exuberance.

Costume Remount Interpreted by Leanne Mahoney
Lighting Design by Roger Morgan
Tito on Timbales is a tribute to the music of master percussionist Tito Puente. In this ballet, choreographer William Whitener captures the joy and intricacies of social dance through cascading patterns, sensual partnering and the community of celebration.
Tito on Timbales and Stick on Bongo performed originally by Tito Puente and the Tito Puente Rhythm Section: Jose Madera, Bobby Rodriguez and Johnny Dandy Rodriguez.
Tito on Timbales was made possible by a grant from the MetLife Foundation and with public support from the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.

Daily, the company releases a new video generated by the dancers, teachers and administrators with the goal of serving as class, exercise, and inspiration: Motivational Mondays (inspirational messages), Take Action Tuesdays (technique tips for young dancers), Wepa Wednesdays (explorations of the many varied styles of Latin Dance), Therapeutic Thursdays (focus on conditioning, health and wellness, stretching), and Flashback Fridays (retrospective looks at past 50 years from Ballet Hispánico's archives)

Entries for college students aged 18 to 22 (including recent graduates) are currently open and can be submitted at broadwayworld.com/nextonstage. Submissions are open through midnight on May 8th. Entries for high school students aged 14-17 are also now open.

5) Premiere Project from Thirdwing

A Streaming Theater Company

THE FEMALE GENIUS

Thirdwing, a digital theater company designed to develop plays directly for streaming as well as for the live stage, has launched its first streaming theater project, Rachel Carey’s THE FEMALE GENIUS on its streaming platform. The production is open for streaming review.

In series of short plays, set up as six separate “episodes,” a dying Emily Dickinson verbally abuses her caring sister; Gertrude Stein's lover wants "to be the man" for a change; Mary Shelley procrastinates on writing Frankenstein by seducing Lord Byron; JK Rowling can’t pay the babysitter; Ayn Rand encourages a young acolyte to assault her; and Zora Neale Hurston’s pro-segregation speech upends white expectations. THE FEMALE GENIUS is a darkly comic look at the struggle of having great talent in a misogynistic world.

All six plays are now available to stream and are under 10 minutes each.

Thirdwing is the first theater company to merge the live experience with the streaming experience, not to supplement one for the other. THE FEMALE GENIUS was supposed to have a concurrent live production happen at The Wild Project to coincide with the streaming launch. Covid-19 scuttled that plan.

Through #SeaportMuseumAtHome

South Street Seaport Museum, which closed its doors in March in response to COVID-19, will remain closed to the public until further notice. Until its physical spaces reopen, the Museum invites friends and fans to stay connected in the digital world. As its staff is still hard at work remotely, every Friday on the Museum's Facebook page, there will be an installment of #SeaportMuseumAtHome: updates posted throughout the day to highlight what the Museum's teams are doing from home: https://www.facebook.com/SouthStreetSeaportMuseum.

Friday, May 1 - Education No. 1
Laura Norwitz, Senior Director for Programs and Education will give a glimpse into the Museum's efforts to provide video and digital resources for teachers, classes and families to do together.

Friday, May 8 - Bowne No. 2 - Bowne & Co. printing shop's normal operations are still on pause, but designers keep on job printing! While they print using the Museum's working collection of letterpress machines, type, and images, the design process almost always begins on a computer. This way, our designers are able to continue working on job printing projects remotely. Get a glimpse at what our designers do by following @bowneprinters on Facebook and Instagram.

Friday, May 15 - Collections No. 2 - Since the second week of March, the six dedicated members of the collections care team (staff, interns, and volunteers) have been meeting virtually to keep track of both ongoing and new projects, brainstorm collection management and remote engagement ideas, and support one another through this time. From home, the team is concentrating on enhancing the digital documentation of the Museum's artifacts and archival material by researching and updating collection database entries, refreshing policies and procedures, and keeping connected with other museums' colleagues through webinars and video meetings. Remote and limited on-site checking of the Museum's collection storage areas and galleries is also happening as part of ongoing collections and facilities operations, which include monitoring temperature and humidity, walk-through spaces to spot-check needs and assessment of item conditions.

There will continue to be more opportunities to explore, learn, and interact with the Museum and staff on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and on the Museum's website.
