More Theater Monday - To Kill A Mockingbird at Madison Square Garden
The below post is my own opinion. I was not compensated for this post.
What: To Kill A Mockingbird
Where: Madison Square Garden
2 Pennsylvania Plaza
New York, NY
When: This event took place on Wednesday February 26, 2020
Mom's view: I recently had the absolute honor of attending a performance of the current Broadway production of To Kill a Mockingbird. This event was historic because it was the first play ever to be performed at Madison Square Garden, and it was also the largest audience ever to view a production of a play. Despite anxiety on the part of author Harper Lee's estate prior to the initial opening of the show on Broadway, the show was well acted and well written for the stage by Aaron Sorkin and did both original author, the aforementioned Ms. Lee, and the story credit. However, none of that is why it was such an honor to be a there for this production. It was both a privilege and an honor to attend this show because of the audience which was made up of mostly of 18,000 New York City public school students who were invited to attend for free. While I have been attending shows since I was a kid myself and covering them for about ten years, many of these kids have probably never even seen a Broadway show before or maybe even any show. Seeing this production through the eyes of these kids made it all new and special again. They were so excited and attentive. They made their feelings for what was going on in the show clear, but not in a way that was disruptive to the show. I realized that maybe there are not theater fans and non theater fans, but there are only theater fans and those who have yet to experience the right show under the right circumstances, and I sincerely hope more people have the opportunity to do so with future events like this. Kudos to Madison Square Garden, the cast crew and producers of To Kill a Mockingbird, and anyone else who participated in making this historic event possible.
