'The Manganiyar Seduction
The White Light Festival welcomes back The Manganiyar Seduction, the acclaimed music-theater work by Indian director Roysten Abel that had its U.S. premiere at the inaugural festival in 2010 and returned by popular demand in 2013. The Manganiyars, nomadic Sufi Muslims from Northwest India, incorporate Hindu deities into their devotional songs. Conceived by Indian director Roysten Abel, more than 40 musicians, led by Deu Khan, are arranged in four levels of red-curtained, brightly lit boxes in a set inspired by the women’s quarters of Hawa Mahal (a royal palace in Jaipur) and the red-light district of Amsterdam. This seduction of the spirit begins quietly with a solitary desert fiddle and builds to an ecstatic eruption of sound, light, and color as the Manganiyar community takes audiences into and beyond their world. There will be a post-performance discussion with Roysten Abel and John Schaefer on Friday, November 8.
Rose Theater, Jazz at Lincoln Center, 10 Columbus Circle.
TICKETS start at $35 and are available by calling 212.721.6500, or visiting LincolnCenter.org/White-LightFestival

DruidShakespeare: Richard III (U.S. production premiere)
Shakespeare depicts one of the world’s greatest villains in Richard III, a chilling story of power and ambition. Richard, Duke of Gloucester, portrayed by Aaron Monaghan, sets about bending the world to his own desires, vanquishing his better angels in pursuit of the crown. The Bard’s ruthless monarch resonates through the ages in this award-winning production from Ireland’s Druid theater company and Tony Award–winning director Garry Hynes. A continuation of the company’s exploration of Shakespeare’s kings, the production reunites the creative team and members of the Druid ensemble behind the celebrated DruidShakespeare: Richard II, Henry IV (Pts. 1 & 2) and Henry V, which played Lincoln Center in 2015. Druid’s acclaimed run of Waiting for Godot, also directed by Hynes and starring Monaghan as Estragon, was featured in the 2018 White Light Festival.
Pre-performance discussion with Garry Hynes and Robert Marx on Sunday, November 10 at 1:45 pm in the John Jay College Lecture Hall. Preview performances are presented on Thursday, November 7 and Friday, November 8 at 7:00 pm. Richard III is made possible in part with the support of Culture Ireland

Stabat Mater (U.S. premiere)
James MacMillan, the preeminent Scottish composer of our time, draws upon his Celtic heritage and Catholic faith to compose modern-day sacred works that transcend the concert hall. This all-MacMillan program, performed by the Britten Sinfonia and The Sixteen, under the baton of Harry Christophers, features the U.S. premieres of MacMillan’s haunting Miserere and his monumental new Stabat Mater, a devastating hymn of a mother’s anguish. Britten Sinfonia previously performed in the U.S. premiere production of Netia Jones’s Curlew River at the 2014 White Light Festival. What Saves Us: Poems of Empathy and Outrage in the Age of Trump
A chorus of powerful contemporary voices in U.S. poetry comes together for the New York City celebration of a seminal anthology of political poems, published by Northwestern University Press. What Saves Us: Poems of Empathy and Outrage in the Age of Trump is an anthology of poems about much more than Trump. These are poems that either embody or express a sense of empathy or outrage, both prior to and following his election. There is an extraordinary diversity of voices. They speak of persecuted and scapegoated immigrants. They bear witness to violence, from police brutality against African Americans to mass shootings. They testify to poverty. There are voices of labor, in the factory or the fields. There are prophetic voices, imploring us to imagine the world we will leave behind in ruins lest we speak and act. However, this is not merely a collection of grievances. The poets build bridges, taking back the language, resisting the demagogic corruption of words themselves, asserting our common humanity. Joining the book’s editor, Martín Espada, at this reading are contributors Denice Frohman, Maria Mazziotti Gillan, John Murillo, Willie Perdomo, Peggy 4 Robles-Alvarado, Nicholas Samaras, Patricia Smith, Lauren Schmidt, Afaa M. Weaver, Elisabet Velasquez, and many more.

John Schaefer, moderator

James MacMillan, composer
Stephen Prothero, author, Religious Literacy
God was declared dead in 1966, no longer relevant to an increasingly secular society. Today, people around the world ardently seek religious and faith-based experiences, at times with an intolerant fervor. How did we vacillate between such extremes in the span of only half a century? In modern society, few topics are as subject to ignorance, misunderstanding, and manipulation as religion. Although it is a central building block of human consciousness, we possess surprisingly little knowledge about religious traditions—both of others and our own. Join WNYC’s John Schaefer and a group of leading thinkers for a spirited panel discussion exploring the many contradictions inherent in our understanding of religion and the evolutionary pathways of religious belief, as well as its intersection with science and art and resonance in our current chaotic climate.

THEATER FOR THE NEW CITY
CRYSTAL FIELD, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
PRESENTS
HOOKED ON HAPPINESS
The Musical for a Cooler Planet
OPENS NOVEMBER 16th
AT THEATER FOR THE NEW CITY
FOR A LIMITED ENGAGEMENT
November 7th through December 1st

Theater for the New City (Crystal Field, Executive Director) today announced that it will present the world premiere of HOOKED ON HAPPINESS, a new musical about global warming, with book & lyrics by Tom Attea, music composed by Arthur Abrams, direction by Mark Marcante, and choreography by Mackenzie Surbey, which opens Sunday, November 16th.  The production is slated for a limited engagement, running from November 7th – December 1st at Theater for the New City, 155 First Avenue. Tickets are $15 ($10 for students and seniors) and can be purchased at the box office (212-254-1109), online HERE or by phone at (888) 549-4106.

HOOKED ON HAPPINESS spotlights a high-school drama class that decides to create their own original musical about climate change, instead of selecting from the musical and play their drama teacher has suggested. Many of their parents are very conservative, and the often frank, passionate content of their lyrics outrages members of the audience.

Concerned they may not have a future, a high school drama class forgoes staging a classic musical or play as their senior-class production in order to do a show about the global climate crisis. They want to join their voices with other young people across the globe to confront the threat our warming climate poses to their future. As one of the students says, “If 16-year-old Greta Thunberg could sail across the Atlantic to demonstrate against climate change, we should at least be able to do a show about it.”

When their drama teacher sees some of the material they've written – about parents being hooked on misery, glued to the news and, in the case of the parents who are Fundamentalist Christians, just waiting for the so-called End Times – she decides to let them go ahead with it. They pull no punches in their lyrics, and the parents who are outraged begin calling for the show to be shut down and the drama teacher to be fired. In response, the students threaten to go on strike.

The playing schedule for Hooked on Happiness is as follows: Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8:00 PM and Sundays at 3PM. Please note that there will be no performance on Thursday, November 28th, due to Thanksgiving
