An Edgy, Supernatural Love Story
About Aristophanes in Hedonistic Athens

Now-July 6, 2019
Tuesdays-Saturdays at 8pm (no performance on July 4th)
Opening Night: Tuesday, June 25th at 8pm

Access Theater Black Box presents The Comedian’s Tragedy, an edgy, supernatural love story about Aristophanes struggling with his muse in Ancient Greece, written by Matthew Amendt.Thirteen performances will be staged at the Access Theater Black Box,380 Broadway, 4th Floor (bet. Walker and White Streets) in New York City from throuugh July 6, 2019.

423 BCE.  The Gods are hungry.  The greatest city of her age, Athens has fallen: wracked with plague, war, drink, lust, gods, demons, and a dark fog of nihilism eating away at her light. Censored and labeled a pervert for standing up to the state, a young Aristophanes passes his nights in a haze of booze and sex, spitting into the face of tomorrow with the courage of the damned. When the unlikeliest of heroes emerges, can a guilty, drunken soul become Orpheus and sing life back into the ashes?  An edgy supernatural love story costumed in the present but taking place in Ancient Athens’ hedonistic height, The Comedian’s Tragedy is a rollercoaster of violence, love, revenge, low comedy and high ideas. Imagine a play that brings together the best heat, the fire of American Acting, marries it to the icy clarity of Classical Tragedy, and out of the steam of that collision tells a new story of the place we all began. When there’s no tomorrow, what are you doing tonight?

6) Central Park's Belvedere Castle Site to Reopen June 28

The Central Park Conservancy recently announced that after a 15-month comprehensive restoration project, the historic Belvedere Castle site will reopen on Friday, June 28.

Children have enjoyed exploring the Belvedere and taking in its sweeping views of Central Park for more than a century. This summer the Conservancy will offer a newDiscovery Walk for Families that will begin at Turtle Pond and highlight the Belvedere and its surrounding landscapes and landmarks.

THE CENTRAL PARK CONSERVANCY’S RESTORATION OF THE BELVEDERE: QUICK FACTS
·         After a comprehensive 15-month long project to restore and repair the historic Belvedere at Central Park, the Central Park Conservancy will reopen this beloved landmark on June 28, 2019.
·         Located mid-Park at 79th Street atop Vista Rock, the Park’s second highest point, the Belvedere has provided visitors with some of the most expansive views of Central Park from its terraces and castle for more than a century.
·         The Belvedere receives approximately one million annual visitors.
·         Belvedere means “beautiful view” in Italian. From the Belvedere visitors can see the Great Lawn, Turtle Pond, the Delacorte Theater, and more.
·         To preserve and protect this cherished site for generations to come, the Conservancy modernized its mechanical and utility systems, restored and waterproofed the Belvedere’s structures and terraces, and recreated lost aspects of its historic design.
·         The Conservancy installed a geothermal system for cooling and heating Belvedere Castle. Workers dug 400 feet into Vista Rock to construct this sustainable system, which has zero emissions and is energy efficient. With minimal visible equipment, it also enables a better experience for visitors.
·         The Conservancy’s work to restore the Belvedere’s structures included:
o   Disassembling and rebuilding the walls enclosing the terraces
o   Installing new waterproofing and drainage systems
o   Cleaning and repairing both the exterior and interior stonework
o   Restoring the three wooden pavilions on the terraces
o   Modernizing the Castle’s mechanics and utilities
·         To restore lost aspects of the Belvedere’s historic design, construction crews recreated a decorative wood tower that was originally part of the large pavilion at the northwest corner nearly 150 years ago.
·         Central Park co-designers Olmsted and Vaux originally conceived of Belvedere Castle as an open-air lookout tower. To recapture this open-air view, crews replaced the existing windows and doors with clear pane glass.
·         Crews replaced the terrace pavement stones with bluestone pavers, laid out according to the historic checkered design.
·         The Conservancy also enhanced one of the most iconic views of the Belvedere: its image from across Turtle Pond. New lighting will illuminate the Belvedere, making it even more beautiful at night.
·         This comprehensive project cost $12 million and was funded by The Thompson Family Foundation.
·         The Central Park Conservancy will lead new tours of the Belvedere and surrounding landscapes and landmarks this summer. Led by the people who know Central Park best, Official Central Park Tours are the only tours that help support the care of Central Park. For dates and to register, visit centralparknyc.org/tours.
The Belvedere: Beautiful View Tour—Enjoy the sweeping vistas of the Great Lawn from the newly restored Belvedere Castle while learning about its history and preservation. Plus, explore the surrounding landscapes and landmarks, including Turtle Pond, King Jagiello, and the 3,500-year-old “Cleopatra’s Needle.”
Discovery Walks for Families: Turtle Pond—Bring your family and discover Turtle Pond, home to five species of turtles who live here year-round. Learn why they love basking in the sun on flat logs or rocks, which makes the base of Vista Rock the perfect spot for their sunbathing activities. Explore the Pond’s history and design, and hear about what it takes to maintain a healthy and beautiful waterbody through hands-on exploration and guided kid-friendly activities.
