Mom's view: Superhero is a new original musical now playing at Second Stage Theater with music by Tom Kitt best known for such shows as Next to Normal and If/Then. The show does have some nice music but it doesn't necessarily stick in your head which isn't helped by the fact that the songs are not even listed in the playbill to jog your memory about them. The one standout number is Save the Girl, but that may be because it was released prior to the opening of the show, which does not take away from the fact that it is a beautiful song charmingly sung by Kyle McArthur as Simon. This is not to say that none of the other songs in show are good. Simon witnessed the death of his father, and has never really dealt with his feelings about it, and his mother doesn't know how to help him deal with it. Jim, a mysterious new neighbor moves in and Simon is convinced that Jim is an actual superhero.  If you like a show that is completely unpredictable, you may enjoy this one because you never quite know what is going to happen next and even if you think you do, you are probably wrong.  The cast members led by veteran performers, Kate Baldwin in the role of Simon's mother and Bryce Pinkham as Jim are all quite good in their roles, and Kyle McArthur makes an impressive debut in the role of Simon. The show raises some important questions about what is the true meaning of being a superhero. However, it just feels like it something is missing in the story. The ending is cathartic, and yet also dissatisfying. It leaves you wanting to know more about these people.
