Tevye Served Raw Extends Run
Sholem Aleichem’s TEVYE SERVED RAW, directed by Allen Lewis Rickman, will extend its run at The Playroom Theater in the Heart of the Theatre District, 151 West 46 Street (just east of Seventh Ave.) into early October, following a brief hiatus after its originally-scheduled closing on 8/14.
TEVYE SERVED RAW (subtitled “Garnished With Jews”) is an evening of stories by Sholem Aleichem, widely considered the greatest Jewish writer. It balances more serious material (the ‘Tevye’ scenes) with some of his best comic stories (“Strange Jews On A Train”, “The Yiddish Sisyphus”, and “A Stepmother’s Trash-Talk”), and is performed in Yiddish with simultaneous translation: via supertitles in the dramatic scenes, and rapid-fire interpolated English dialogue in the comedic ones.
TEVYE SERVED RAW, which features an original score by Alex Ryaboy, will play until early October.

New Light Theater Project announces 5 NYC premiere plays that encompass “A History, Rewritten” for their 2018/2019 season
New Light Theater Project (Sarah Norris, Artistic Director; Michael Aguirre, Producing Director; Jacob Perkins, Literary Manager) will present their most ambitious season to date with five NYC premieres in its 2018-2019 season, all exploring the theme: “A History, Rewritten.”
Kicking off the new season is Owen Panettieri’s MEANINGFUL CONVERSATION, with direction from Anaïs Koivisto. The production will run September 7 thru September 22 at the A.R.T./New York Theatres as a co-production with Luis A. Miranda Jr. During a blackout, new neighbors David and Nat engage in unusual conversation and wind up revealing more about themselves than they intend. Twi years later, they are thrust back into each other lives when a domestic dispute erupts in their building, forcing them to reexamine their initial encounter in unexpected ways.
After a successful run at Centenary Stage Company in Hackettstown, NJ, playwright Michelle Kholos Brooks and director Sarah Norris will re-team to present the NYC premiere of HITLER’S TASTERS. Three times a day, every day, a group of young women have the opportunity to die for their country. They are Adolph Hitler's food tasters. Using an anachronistic retelling of a historical footnote, and stretching from the WWII era to today’s autocracy, the play asks us to consider what girls discuss as they wait to see if they will live through another meal. Winner of the 2017 Glaspell Award, HITLER’S TASTERS will run at IRT Theatre from October 5 thru 27 as part of New Light’s all-female festival.
The festival also includes a reading series of 3 new plays, written and directed by female-identifying artists. The playwright/director pairs will be announced soon.
Winner of the 2018-2019 New Light New Voices Award is Ray Yamanouchi for his play THE AMERICAN TRADITION. With direction by Axel Avin, Jr., the production will run at the 13th Street Repertory Company from January 25 through February 16, 2019 . Set in Antebellum America with an absurd and Brechtian twist, fictitious characters Eleanor—cross-dressing as a white planter—and her husband, Bill—pretending to be her loyal servant—attempt to escape to the free state of Pennsylvania. Their operation is running smoothly until they meet Walsh, a drunk planter and member of the Not All Slavers organization, who steals Bill at a rest stop. Armed with a Glock-19 and her fair skin, Eleanor sets out to rescue him by any means necessary.
New Light is thrilled to bring Deb Margolin’s IMAGINING MADOFF, with direction by Jerry Heymann, to NYC from March 1 thru March 23, 2019 after successful runs in Washington D.C. and Boston. Margolin’s powerful play finds Ponzi schemer Bernard Madoff in prison, determined to control his own narrative for history as he dictates to a visiting biographer stories about his childhood, his family, women, money and an all-night meeting he had with Holocaust survivor and poet, Solomon Galkin. The play explores themes of greed, willful blindness to the truth, and the beauty and danger of absolute faith, either in God or in men. Theater TBA.,
Finally, Amina Henry’s new play, THE GREAT NOVEL, will round out the season in June 7 thru June 29, 2019. The production will partner with The Flea Theater’s Anchor Program, with direction from Sarah Norris. For most of her adult life, Bertha has served as the Brennans’ housekeeper. While polishing the silverware and washing the windows, she dreams of honoring the promise she made to her grandmother long ago to write the next great American novel. But as she drafts her story, she can only see the imprints of the Brontë sisters, Dickens, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, and most of all, the Brennans. Spurred on by recurring visits from her Granny in the afterlife, Bertha seeks a new language for a narrative that only she can tell, uninhibited by the ghosts of literary convention.

"The Hustle" is a catchall name for some disco dances that were extremely popular in the 1970s. Today it mostly refers to the unique partner dance done in ballrooms and nightclubs to disco music. It has some features in common with Mambo and swing dance. Its basic steps are somewhat similar to the Disco fox, which emerged at about the same time and is more familiar in various European countries. In the 1970s there was also a line dance called "The Hustle." Modern partner hustle is sometimes referred to as "New York Hustle." People still do this dance today.

Pula, or rain, is highly cherished in Botswana, a semi-arid country in Africa. This fictional play - anchored on the practical and mystical relationship that Batswana have with rain - traces how rain brings humans, plants and animals under one Botswana sky.
Because of this close relationship with rain, Batswana have always had endless names for rain depending on whether the rain is creating or destroying, whether it is before or after the planting of crops. And so, when drought hits one tiny village in Botswana, the chief assembles his villagers to find a solution. One young woman, Mmapula, is identified as the Rainmaker who must set forth in adventurous search of a specific type of life-giving rain for her people
This spell-binding musical from Botswana chronicles a rainmaker's quest to regain her powers. Her physical and spiritual rite of passage takes her to the inland delta and savannas of their homeland whereupon she consults tribespeople, and animal and plant communities for wisdom. In this community, where life is lived in communion with all living beings, the Rainmaker - through traditional song and dance - unites all creation toward the goal of bringing rain to her desert land. The result is an exhilarating celebration of all life, with a powerful heart-warming twist.

On August 22, TRU will host a free meet-and-greet info session about their Producer Development and Mentorship Program (PDMP). Prospective applicants will have the opportunity to learn from and network with our Broadway producer instructors: Jana Robbins, who runs the Basic Class, and Jane Dubin & Rachel Weinstein who run the Master Class which is open to graduates of Basic Class, and a limited number of producers with a high level of experience. (Due to a scheduling conflict, Basic Class instructor Erin Craig will not be at the event.) Participants will also meet and hear from successful program graduates.
PDMP's purpose is to give members the knowledge and resources to become commercial theater producers, non-profit theater producers and/or self-producing artists. (There may come a time in every theater artist's life when you need to self-produce a show and create your own opportunities, and PDMP aims to provide the tools for that occasion.) Our program teaches necessary skills such as developing a business plan, raising money, marketing and putting together creative production teams. PDMP is the only theater production program to offer such in-depth instruction from accomplished Broadway producers at such an affordable price. TRU's Basic Class meets one evening of each month for 10 months, and the cost last year was $295 ($29.50/class), though prices for next year are not set yet. JANA ROBBINS is the recipient of the 2017 TRU "Spirit of Theater Award"and is both a Broadway actor and producer having played leading roles on Broadway in Good News, I Love My Wife, Crimes of the Heart, Gypsy (playing the "bump it with the trumpet stripper Mazzeppa while covering Tyne Daly as Mama Rose) and The Tale of the Allergist's Wife (covering both Linda Lavin and Michele Lee and starring opposite Valerie Harper in the National Tour). Jana founded Better World Productions in order to "present theater that not only entertains, but also educates; and inspires us to create a Better World. She made her Broadway producing debut with Little Women. Other Broadway producing credits include the revival of Ragtime and a financial stake in War Horse and Something Rotten (currently on National Tour). Off-Broadway productions includes I Love You Because, Through The Night andWhite's Lies. She's also a producer on Marianne Elliot's Heisenbergand the upcoming Company in London this season. RACHEL WEINSTEIN is a Broadway producer with over two decades of experience in professional performing arts management. Rachel began her career in the not-for-profit sector holding leadership positions at theatre companies around the globe including: Roundabout Theatre Company (New York), Donmar Warehouse (London), Writers' Theatre (Chicago) and The Old Vic (London/New York). In 2012, Rachel segued to the commercial side of the business producing for Broadway. Her producing credits include: The Heiress (starring Jessica Chastain), the Pulitzer-prize winning Disgraced, Hughie (starring Forest Whitaker), the world premiere musical of An American in Paris, which is currently enjoying a US National Tour as well as a West End production and Farinelli and the King (starring Mark Rylance), which is scheduled to open on Broadway in December 2017. Rachel is also an Associate Producer of the Tony Award-winning musical, Dear Evan Hansen, which is currently playing on Broadway at the Music Box Theatre. Rachel is a graduate of the Commercial Theatre Institute's 14-week Intensive (New York) and a former member of TCG's National Council for the American Theatre.
Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU) is the leading network for developing theater professionals, a twenty-five year old 501c3 nonprofit organization created to help producers produce, emerging theater companies to emerge healthily and all theater professionals to understand and navigate the business of the arts.
