Theater Thursday - Stage Life, Single Rider and Molasses in January

We were given free tickets to Stage Life for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Stage Life

Where: Lion Theatre
             Theatre Row
             410 W. 42nd St.
             New York, NY

Who: Teens and Up

When: Through June 9, 2018

Mom - Stage Life is a show about the craft of theater. It does not have a linear plot but it is just a series of scenes that do not really have any connection to each other except that they are all related to the theater in some way. There are scenes about acting class, critics, playwriting and more some of which are more interesting than others.  The show is well acted by the six member cast who all play a variety of different roles many of them actual historical figures including Geraldine Page, Anton Chekov, David Belasco, and Sandy Meisner.  The show is full of great theater quotes which are recited between scenes. The show is somewhat slow, however, and would probably be most interesting to those in the acting profession themselves or for anyone interested in a primer on theater. It is definitely not a show for children or anyone with a short attention span.

We were given free tickets to Single Rider for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Single Rider

Where: Players Theatre
             115 MacDougal St.
             New York NY

Who: Ages 13 and up

When: Through June 17

Me - Single Rider was good. It was about these Amish girls on Rumspringawho went to this amusement park and met people that they were attracted to. I liked that this show unpredictable. The story was interesting. I didn't know that much about the Amish. It was fun to learn about them through a show. The characters were mostly likeable.  The songs were really good. I liked them. I don't remember them now, but I would like to listen to them again. If they put out a CD of the show I would get it. The acting, singing, and dancing were all enjoyable. The amusement park set was cool. The show was completely different than any show I ever saw before. I liked that about it. People who like a show with an interesting plot, likeable characters, and good songs would enjoy this show.

Mom - Single Rider is a sweet, charming, and romantic story. It is the story of 3 Amish teenagers on Rumspringa who take a trip to an amusement park that changes their lives. Sarah is looking for a good time but she may find more than she bargained for. Moira just wants to take it all in, but she discovers things about herself that she never knew. Abigail is the least enthusiastic of the trio but then she meets Shane and begins to question everything about her life and her future. The show has an engaging story, interesting characters and nice songs including some really beautiful ballads. The cast does a good job with their roles especially Angela Sclafani as the innocent Abigail whose eyes are sweetly opened to the wider world. She and Clay Singer as Shane have a nice chemistry together. The ending may upset some people who prefer shows to have a more definitive conclusion but all in all, it's a very entertaining show that fans of romance in particular should enjoy.

We were given free tickets to Molasses in January for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Molasses in January

Where: The Theater Center
             1627 Broadway
             New York, NY

Who: Ages 13 and Up

Me - Molasses in January was interesting. It was a show about people who lived in Boston where there was a big molasses tank. It was leaking. Some people thought it was going to explode. I had never heard the story before I saw the show although it was based on a true story. I liked some of the songs but I don't remember them. The acting was good. The singing was lovely. The sets and costumes were very old timey. However, that is because the show took place a long time ago. My favorite thing was that I learned something about a part of history I never knew about. I like learning things from shows. When I learn things in school, I am never interested. It is more fun to learn things from a show. The show was special because it talked about something in history that I really hadn't heard mentioned before. People who are interested in learning about history in a fun way will enjoy this show.

Mom - Molasses in January is a show about the Boston Molasses Disaster of 1919. However, the actual disaster is kind of glossed over and is not really dealt with that much in the show. It is actually kind of anticlimactic because throughout the show they hint at the fact that some big terrible thing is going to happen, and then, when it finally does it gets just a brief mention toward the very end of the show. It is hard to comprehend how terrible this event really was when only one character in the show is directly effected by it. Instead the show  is mostly the story of a family. Their lives are effected by the Boston Molasses Disaster but that is only a small part of their story. It is more about a determined woman raising two children on her own after bravely kicking her cheating husband out of their home. It is also about her children growing up and coming into their own. The show is a musical but mostly the songs are not all that memorable although there are one or two nice ones particularly the touching ballad Not Any Particular Star Will Do. If you are interested in the story of a family in 18th century America, you may enjoy this show. If you really want to find out about the Boston Molasses Disaster, it is better to look somewhere else.

Where-To-Go- Wednesday The Jewish Museum - Scenes from the Collection

What: The Jewish Museum

Where: 1109 5th Ave.
             New York, NY

Who: All ages

Me - The Jewish Museum was interesting. There were a lot of works of art. There was a sculpture of  a person that looked like it was made out of newspapers. There was a sculpture of  a suitcase with all kinds of candles and things that give off light hanging out of it. There was a painting of a bunch of people sitting around a table . It looks like they  were having a holiday meal. There was  a bottle. It looked like there was a castle in it. There were lots of menorahs and other Jewish artifacts. There was a  lot of  artwork and objects with  Jewish stars in them. Some of them were really cool. One was like a wall and it said things and in the middle was an imprint of a Jewish star. There was a sedar plate with a Jewish star. It was really sparkly, and it was very pretty. It was my favorite thing at the museum. There were these things that were like viewers, and there was a picture at the end of each one. When you looked through one of the viewers, you could see the picture at the end better. That was really cool! People interested in art or Jewish history would enjoy this museum.

Mom - Early this year after an extensive renovation the Jewish Museum's permanent gallery Scenes From A Collection reopened. The vast collection encompasses the entire third floor of the museum and includes over 600 works ranging from ancient to modern pieces. It covers over 4,000 years of Jewish history. It includes numerous pieces of art of all types: painting, sculpture, photography and more. There are also a wide array of objects on display including a bracelet from Theresienstadt and an assortment of different objects with Jewish stars in their shape. The exhibit is divided into several sections. Some parts will remain on permanent display. Others will rotate. The museum offers tours and art talks for adults and/or older children as well a children's interactive guide to the gallery for younger children.  The interactive guide teaches children things to look for in the art and objects they see like colors and shapes and also encourages them to make art of their own  and gives them the opportunity to do so.The museum also frequently holds concerts and other events for children. These things truly make the museum a place that all ages can enjoy.  On Saturdays, admission to the museum is free.

Tips for Tuesday- Books: The High Tide Club and Daditude

We may have been given some of the below mentioned books for free for review purposes.

Mom - Today I am recommending two books.

The first book I am recommending is the fiction book, The High Tide Club, by Mary Kay Andrews. This book is a little bit different than a typical Mary Kay Andrews book. It is more of a mystery. Ninety nine year old heiress, Josephine Bettendorf Warrick is dying and she wants to make things right with her three girlhood best friends and/or their descendants. She summons lawyer, Brooke Trapnell so she can update her will, but when she dies before doing so, it is up to Brooke to bring together Josephine's only living girlhood friend and the descendants of the others including herself to solve a mystery and carry out Josephine's legacy. This book has plenty of intrigue including a decades old unsolved murder and a child mysteriously whisked away to an orphanage at birth. However, it also has plenty of Andrew's customary romance. In fact, there is so much going on in this book that it will keep you turning pages and you will not be able to put it down until you have read the whole thing.

The second book I am recommending is Daditude, the Joy and Absurdities of Modern Fatherhood by Chris Erskine. Chris Erskine is a columinist for the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune and occassionally for other papers. He is also a husband and father, and and every week he discusses the craziness of family life in his newspaper columns. This book is a collection of some of his best work including columns about  a trip to drop his daughter off at college loaded down with important things like numerous pairs of shoes, a Thanksgiving play about popcorn and and a whole column devoted to the crazy collection of stuff that accumulates in a car. Even as he pokes fun at ordinary life and his own family, Erskine's love for his family clearly shines through making this book sweet and touching as well as being incredibly funny. It is a  book that both men and women can enjoy. In fact, if you are looking for a light read that will give you a good laugh, this book is a good choice.

And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.

Monthly Mash-up for May, 2018 Visting Broadway Stage Doors and Keens Teens

Me - My topic for this month is visiting stage doors. I love going to the stage door after I see a Broadway show and getting my playbill signed! I have been to the stage doors for the following shows: Aladdin, On Your Feet, Natasha Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812,  Ground Hog Day, Bandstand, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Escape to Margaritaville, The Band's Visit and Hello Dolly. When I went to the Hello Dolly stage door, Gavin Creel introduced himself to me and asked me my name. That was so nice! When I met my Mom and sister after they saw Carousel and went to the stage door. One of the cast members asked me if it was my first show. When I said "No." She asked how many shows I've seen when I said "28". She looked at me in shock. It was so funny! Of course, it was also funny because I hadn't actually seen Carousel, I was just meeting my Mom and my sister there. Over all, visiting stage doors is a,ways a really fun experience.

I was given a free ticket to Keens Teens for Review purposes. Any and all opinions here are my own.

Mom - My topic for this month is Keens Teens. The Keen Theater Company has a unique program that serves to improve the quality of plays for teens while simultaneously teaching teens about theater. Each year, three new one act plays for teens are selected and 40 teens with diverse backgrounds representing all five boroughs of New York City are chosen to participate in the program. The program is free but an audition is required to get in. The teens get the opportunity to learn about the theater and how a play is produced. They also have the opportunity to put on and act in a production at the end of the program.

The three plays commissioned for the program are diverse as well.  This years there was a comedy, a drama, and a musical. The comedy, Winifred & Myrtle Go to High School, by Leah Nanako Winkler was about a couple of elderly women who were magical transformed back into 15 year olds. The drama, Around 2, by James Anthony Tyler was about divisivness between students on opposites of the political spectrum. The musical, The Caribbean Queen, was abou a girl on a family cruise who magically meets a group of pirates.

All three shows were very entertaining. The talent of the teens performing in the show was incredible. Holiday Senquiz and Josi Oz who played the older Winifred and Myrtle in the first show were especially impressive. Their performances truly captured what it is like to be elderly right down to their tinest movements. All in all, attending these shows was a delightful experience that I would recommend. I can't wait to have the opportunity to attend next year's Teens Keens performances.

And that's our view. What's on your mind?

Tune in tomorrow for Tips for Tuesday.

Skintight will begin preview performances Off-Broadway on May 31, 2018, and open officially on June 21, 2018 at the Laura Pels Theatre in the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre (111 West 46th Street). This will be a limited engagement through August 26, 2018.

Tony Award winner Idina Menzel returns to the New York theater stage following her Tony nominated performance in If/Then. Menzel makes her Roundabout Theatre Company debut in Skintight; she has been a part of the development process with playwright Joshua Harmon since the first reading in January 2015.

Roundabout reunites writer Joshua Harmon (Bad JewsSignificant Other) and director Daniel Aukin (Bad Jews) for Skintighta scorching examination of beauty, youth and sexReeling from her ex-husband’s engagement to a much younger woman, Jodi Isaac (Menzel) turns to her famous fashion-designer dad for support. Instead, she finds him wrapped up in his West Village townhouse with Trey. Who’s 20. And not necessarily gay. But probably an adult film star. At least, according to Jodi’s son. Who’s also 20. And definitely gay. Skintight assays the nature of love, the power of attraction, and the ways in which a superficial culture persists in teaching its children that all that matters is what’s on the inside.

HALF TIME
A NEW MUSICAL

PERFORMANCES BEGIN MAY 31, 2018
LIMITED ENGAGEMENT THROUGH JULY 1, 2018
AT PAPER MILL PLAYHOUSE

OPENING NIGHT IS TUESDAY, JUNE 12, 2018, AT 7:30PM

Half Time begins performances Thursday, May 31, 2018, for a limited engagement through Sunday, July 1, 2018, at Paper Mill Playhouse (22 Brookside Drive) in Millburn, NJ.  Opening Night is set for Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at 7:30 p.m.

From the director/choreographer of Kinky Boots comes the incredible true story of ten determined dreamers who audition to dance at half time for a major basketball team. They have three things in common: they love to dance, they have something to prove, and they are all over 60. Only after making the cut do they learn they won’t be dancing tap, salsa or swing—instead, they will bring down the house with a style that is entirely new to them: hip-hop. Take the uplifting journey with these dreamers—and the young coaches who inspire them along the way—as they battle self-doubt, stereotypes and even each other for a chance to bust a move at center court in front of 20,000 screaming fans. Together they remind us that in life, when the odds are stacked against you and the challenges seem too great to overcome, it’s not the end of the game—it’s Half Time.

Half Time will be performed at Paper Mill Playhouse eight times a week, Wednesday through Sunday. Performance schedule: Wednesday at 7:30pm, Thursday at 1:30pm and 7:30pm, Friday at 8:00pm, Saturday at 1:30pm and 8:00pm and Sunday at 1:30pm and 7:00pm.

Tickets are on sale now starting at $34. Tickets may be purchased by calling 973.376.4343, at the Paper Mill Playhouse Box Office at 22 Brookside Drive in Millburn, or online atwww.PaperMill.org. Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express accepted. Groups of 10 or more can receive up to a 40% discount on tickets and should call 973.315.1680. Students may order $23 rush tickets over the phone or in person at the Paper Mill Playhouse box office on the day of the performance.
