Bromance

Debut Show From Britain’s Hottest Young Acrobatic Group,
Barely Methodical Troupe

Winner of the 2013 Circus Maximus Award and the Total Theatre and Jackson’s Lane Award for Circus at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2014, Bromance is the debut show from Barely Methodical Troupe. Audacious, touching and exhilarating, Bromance is a tour-de-force of cutting-edge physical heroics, wittily exploring male companionship and its perceived limits. Bromance opened at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2014 and has toured internationally since. As the last stop on their international tour, Bromance makes its New York Premiere at The New Victory Theater from February 9 - 25, 2018.

Bromance is a display of platonic male affection combined with humor and exceptional acrobatic skills in parkour, b-boying, tricking, hand-to-hand acrobatics and cyr wheel. The London-based troupe includes creators Beren D’Amico, Louis Gift and Charlie Wheeller. Rounding out the cast is Arthur Parsons who alternates performances with Louis Gift. Bromance fuses old-school acrobatics with contemporary dance, giving the circus a fresh, new perspective. All four performers studied at The National Centre for Circus Arts in London, bringing years of training to the stage. Each of the bromantics is an expert in a particular art form, all of which are synthesized into a performance that’s both playful and poignant.

A Brooklyn Boy
Now in Previews
Official Off-Off-Broadway Opening Night is Thursday, February 15
East Village Playhouse
340 East 6th Street
New York, NY

The acclaimed play A Brooklyn Boy, a one man show co-written and performed by Steven Prescod and co-written and directed by Moises Roberto Belizario, will have its official Off-Off-Broadway opening night on Thursday, February 15, 2018.  A Brooklyn Boy is now in previews at the East Village Playhouse (340 East 6th Street).

A Brooklyn Boy is a riveting spoken-word performance that portrays Steven Prescod's coming-of-age story, taking audiences on a journey from adversity to personal triumph.  Born in Brooklyn’s Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood to a Grenadian mother and a Guyanese father, Steven was only one year old when his father was incarcerated. Steven grew up in a house surrounded by a variety of relatives who all had an impact on his life, many of whom are among the 32 characters he plays throughout the show.

As an impressionable teenager, despite his efforts to break free from his neighborhood’s unyielding grip, Steven was constantly pulled back, ultimately leading to his arrest. While facing a seven-year jail sentence, Steven could have become another statistic or headline. Instead, he took a second chance at life.

Performances for A Brooklyn Boy run Thursdays and Fridays at 7pm, and Saturdays at 2pm and 7pm. Tickets are $40 and available through OvationTix.com

This Valentine's Day, join Triskelion Arts and Vangeline Theater in their love of Butoh, dance and chocolate for a multi-sensory experience to remember! An evening of Contemporary Dance influenced by Butoh featuring renowned Japanese dancer Mari Osanai, from Aomori, Japan and Contemporary dancer/ choreographer Madelyn Sher (New York). Tickets also include a delicious chocolate tasting experience.

"I love you I miss my friend and the music is beautiful" performed and choreographed by Madelyn Sher (15 minutes).
Madelyn Sher is a movement-based artist born, raised, and based in New York City. Her choreographic work melds contemporary dance, Butoh, physical theater, and mime. She is an actor represented by Abrams Artists Agency, and dances with the Herbert H. Dance Company. She has danced in works by Vangeline Theater, RediDance, and Ni'ja Whitson. Madelyn holds a B.A. in dance and philosophy from the Macaulay Honors College at CUNY Lehman and is a graduate of the drama department at LaGuardia Arts High School. She teaches creative movement at P.S. 42 in Chinatown.

Boundary choreographed and performed by Mari Osanai (Japan) (50 minutes)
Mari Osanai was born in Aomori (north top of main Island in Japan) Japan. She was trained in Classical Ballet and Modern dance at an early age and later studied jazz dance Tai Chi and Noguchi Taiso. Noguchi Taiso and its philosophy and theory had a great influence on her creations. Her unique and complex movements are created interweaving these techniques as well as taking classes with Mr. Hironobu Oikawa. Mari Osanai's dance works have also been heavily influenced by an early exposure to Butoh in Japan in the 1980's and 90's.

VANGELINE THEATER/ NEW YORK BUTOH INSTITUTE aims to preserve the legacy and integrity of Japanese Butoh, while carrying the art form well into the future. The unique art of Butoh originated in post-World War II Japan as a reaction to the loss of identity caused by the westernization of Japanese culture, as well as a realization that ancient Japanese performing traditions no longer spoke to a contemporary audience. One of the major developments in contemporary dance in the latter half of the 20th century, Butoh combines dance, theater, improvisation and influences of Japanese traditional performing arts to create a unique performing art form that is both controversial and universal in its expression. The Vangeline Theater is home to the New York Butoh Institute, dedicated to the advancement of Butoh in the 21st century

present
The Art of Loss
at The Theater at the 14th Street Y
February 16 - 18, 2018

The 14
th Street Y

and Bryn Cohn + Artists (BC+A) present The Art of Loss at The Theater at the 14th Street Y, 344 E. 14th Street, NYC, from February 16-18, 2018. Performances: Friday and Satur
day at 7:30pmSundayat 3pm. Tickets are $25 ($20 for students, $15 for children ages 12 and under) and are available at https://14streety.secure.force.com/ticket#details_a0S36000004qD6oEAE.

Bryn Cohn + Artists presents their first evening of repertory, The Art of Loss, a collection of notable works from 2012-2017 that expose the rebellion, hope and despair that root in otherness. Renowned for their ferocious physicality, theatrical worlds and intimate performances, BC + A navigates an unforgettable cultural, emotional and kinetic adventure.

The evening will include the World Premiere of a brand new politically-inspired work, A Perfect Union, which addresses the current sociopolitical climate in our world through the lenses of race, gender, sexuality, terrorism, activism, hierarchical structures and humanitarian effort. In her first-ever musical composition, Cohn has designed a mash-up score sourced from inaugural and political speeches by Jimmy Carter, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump.

The program also includes four audience favorites: HOME, Skin, 4AM and If You Sink.

HOME
(2016) is a dance - theater work inspired by familial dynamics and the pursuit of physical, emotional and spiritual manifestations of connection.  The work embodies a non-linear narrative that provides a lens into the varied encounters that occur within a group of individuals inhabiting, fighting for and existing in harmony within designated spaces.
Music: Orig
inal Composition by Kevin Keller.

The newest piece in the company's repertory, 4AM (2017) illuminates the uncertainty, spirituality and sensuality that emanate from relinquishing inhibition and surrendering to sensation. Contextualized through examinations of rave and trance culture, kinetic and explosive choreography promotes ways of kinesthetically and psychologically losing oneself within environments, others and movement vocabularies.
Music by Loscil, The Sight Below & Chaos, Move D, Positive Centre, Planetary Assault Systems, Julianna Barwick.

Skin
(2015) explores how we physically and metaphorically "build" a person in a continuous cycle of creation and destruction in response to social castes, gender, race, sexuality and political systems. The cast enters dualistic states of being - God and man, sculptor and subject, dictator and citizen - exploring how each person or entity might be formed, and the freedom, rebellion and heroism that accompany this process.
Music: Original Composition by Kevin Keller

If You Sink
(2012) examines archetypical models of heteronormative relationships and corresponding social constructions of power that exist. Movement languages encompassing rhythmic nuance punctuated by highly articulated gesture and classical idioms are seamlessly woven into the subtleties of Chopin's score.
Music by Chopin

About Emergency
Present day. A Slave Ship emerges out of the Hudson River in front of the Statue of Liberty, sending New York City into a frenzy as they try to understand this bizarre and unexplainable phenomenon. Award-winning actor/writer/poet/community activist Daniel Beaty portrays more than 40 characters in this solo theatrical tour-de-force as he explores our shared humanity and what it means to be free. Through the characters' various testimonies on identity and personal freedom, Emergency is an intricately woven, urgent, witty and moving commentary of modern African American life.

The play's first voice is a reporter announcing the startling development in the harbor. Others follow quickly: a profane homeless man; a religious grandmother who understands the slave ship to be a sign from God; a transsexual who mistakes it for a new Carnival Cruise; an academic expert in "Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome"; and a group calling themselves the Pissed Off Negroes, who plan to shoot anyone who tries to remove the ship. Inhabiting them all, Beaty takes his place in a long line of comic chameleons he cites as influences in a 2013 interview with The Boston Globe, including Lily Tomlin, John Leguizamo, Robin Williams, and Whoopi Goldberg.

Marking the 2018 Winter Olympics and the 24th anniversary of the Harding/Kerrigan scandal, Broadway stars Spencer and Worsham play the rival skaters in the show The New York Times dubbed “darkly comedic,” and critics on both coasts have hailed as “brilliant.”  A clip from the award-winning Chicago production of Tonya & Nancy was featured on January 11 on ABC.

Before there was the new Tonya Harding bio-pic, there was this Rock Opera, which played Boston, LA, had its sold-out run at NYMF, and a recent acclaimed run in Chicago. Now, Tonya & Nancy returns to NYC in a concert produced by Paul Boghosian/ Harborside Films, with a forthcoming live CD by Broadway Records.  Both the concert and album will be directed by the multi-talented Grammy and Emmy winner Michael J. Moritz Jr, a two-time Tony Award producing nominee as well as a star pianist, Music Director, arranger and performer.

Tonya & Nancy: The Rock Opera plays Feinstein’s/54 Below (254 West 54th Street) on Feb. 13, 2018 at 9:30 PM.  There is a $35 cover charge and a $25 food and beverage minimum.
