Neuroscience with Attitude

Science rapper Baba Brinkman (Rap Guide to Evolution) teams up with neuroscientist Dr. Heather Berlin (host of "Science Goes to the Movies" on PBS) to explore the brain basis of improvisation and comedy. What's going on "under the hood" when a comedian riffs or a rapper freestyles? Why are the spontaneous moments of life always the most memorable? Does anything actually rhyme with Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex?

A married couple in real life, Baba and Heather bring you the latest research on brain science and creativity while putting their odd-couple relationship under the microscope. Learn how a rapper seduces a scientist, how hard it is to solve a math problem while rapping, and how your subconscious mind influences your daily thoughts and feelings. BALLET HISPANICO
ANNOUNCES ITS 2017 NEW YORK SEASON
AT THE JOYCE THEATER
FEATURING ALL-FEMALE CHOREOGRAPHERS
April 18-23, 2017
World Premiere of Con Brazos Abiertos by Michelle Manzanales
Línea Rectaby Annabelle Lopez Ochoa
3. Catorce Dieciséis by Tania Pérez-Salas

Ballet Hispánico, the nation's premier Latino dance organization, brings its bold and eclectic brand of contemporary dance to the Joyce Theater with a program of all-female choreographers from April 18-23, 2017. Tickets start at $10 and are on sale now at Joyce.org
The engagement features the world premiere of Michelle Manzanales's Con Brazos Abiertos, an exploration of iconic Mexican symbols that Manzanales was reluctant to embrace as a Mexican-American child growing up in Texas; Línea Recta by Belgian-Colombian Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, a work pairing the hallmark passion of flamenco dance with highly inventive and intricate partnering; and 3. Catorce Dieciséis by Tania Pérez-Salas, one of the leading voices of Mexican contemporary dance, which draws inspiration from the number Pi to reflect on the circularity of the human condition.

Con Brazos Abiertos (2017) by Michelle Manzanales - World Premiere
In her first work for Ballet Hispánico, Michelle Manzanales explores with humility, nostalgia and humor the iconic Mexican symbols that she was reluctant to embrace as a Mexican-American child growing up in Texas. Intertwining folkloric details with a distinctly contemporary voice in dance, set to music that ranges from Julio Iglesias to rock en español, Con Brazos Abiertos is a fun and frank look at a life caught between two cultures. Con Brazos Abiertos came to fruition through Ballet Hispánico's Instituto Coreográfico, an innovative choreography lab for Latino dance makers launched in 2010 by Artistic Director & CEO Eduardo Vilaro.
Línea Recta (2016) by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa
From one of today's most sought-after choreographers comes a powerful and resonant work that explores an intriguing aspect of flamenco dance: the conspicuous absence of physical contact between dancers. While maintaining the integrity and hallmark passion of the genre, Belgo-Colombian Annabelle Lopez Ochoa imagines an original and explosive movement language premised upon the theme of communication between the sexes and performed to an original guitar composition by Eric Vaarzon Morel. Línea Recta came to fruition through Ballet Hispánico's Instituto Coreográfico, an innovative choreography lab for Latino dance makers launched in 2010 by Artistic Director & CEO Eduardo Vilaro. Línea Recta was commissioned in part by the Apollo Theater and Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival.
3. Catorce Dieciséis (2002) by Tania Pérez-Salas
One of the leading voices of Mexican contemporary dance, Tania Pérez-Salas draws inspiration from the number Pi to reflect on the circularity of the human condition. With intense theatricality and breathtaking imagery set to music by Vivaldi and other Baroque composers, 3. Catorce Dieciséis is a joyful feast for the senses.

Butoh for Waste Prevention:
Reducing Coffee Trash in New York
April 20-22, 2017 at 8pm

Triskelion Arts, in association with Vangeline Theater, presents Wake Up and Smell the Coffee - Butoh for Waste Prevention: Reducing Coffee Trash in New York at Triskelion Arts (106 Calyer Street, Brooklyn, NY 11222) from April 20-22, 2017 at 8pm. Tickets are $16 and are available at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/triskelion-arts-presents-vangeline-theater-tickets-30044256179.

Vangeline Theater seeks to increase environmental awareness in New York and nationally, resulting in a positive impact on our ecosystem. As a key component of this initiative, Vangeline Theater will remount an evening-length Butoh performance piece, for a total of three performances, and the final show will coincide with Earth Day on April 22, 2017.

Wake Up and Smell the Coffee utilizes the intensity of the art form Butohto convey a serious problem: the environmental repercussions of non-recyclable waste. The tradition and techniques of Butoh are rooted in an art form that has the power to bring us back to our humanity and become closer to the Earth through meditative and hypnotic movement motifs. This includes uncomfortable truths we need to face, such as confronting the "garbage," or grotesque parts of our society. The performers will literally dance through garbage; a set made of collected unsalvageable coffee cups. This initiative will serve to increase environmental awareness in New York City through dance and have a tangible impact on our ecosystem.

Associated Chamber Music Players (ACMP)
and the ACMP Foundation
announce
Community Music Grants
Associated Chamber Music Players (ACMP) announces the return of the Foundation's largest grant program, the Community Music program. The program was introduced in 1993, but put on hiatus in 2010 as a result of the recession.
The Community Music program will provide funding for programs beginning this spring. Community Music grants support the continuing learning and instruction in chamber music for musicians of all ages through community-based programs. Priority is given to programs that encourage diversity and education and provide access for underserved communities. Applications for programs for students ages 18 and under are of particular interest. Grants in the range of $1,500 - $2,500 will be awarded in spring 2017 for programs beginning after the deadline date, May 15, 2017.
Applicants to the program can visit our website: www.acmp.net, and complete an online application prior to the May 15, 2017 deadline.
In addition to the Community Music program, ACMP provides workshop grants to organizations providing chamber music workshops for adult amateurs worldwide. In our most recent round, in January 2017, eighteen grants were awarded, including four to overseas organizations and fourteen in the U.S. Overseas grants were provided for chamber music workshops in Japan, Israel, and Belgium. Grants in the U.S. include awards to Chamber Musicians of Northern California at San Francisco State University; Boston Chamber Music Society at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and to the Music Northwest Camp, Seattle.
ACMP Members may also apply for Home Coaching grants, where a professional musician will provide coaching to an ensemble on particular repertoire.
A list of recent grantees can be found at https://acmp.net/grants.
ACMP also presents an annual award for chamber music education achievement. Just announced, the 2017 Susan McIntosh Lloyd Award for excellence in diversity and education in chamber music was awarded to The Preucil School of Music, in recognition of the leadership by Doris Preucil in promoting the love and knowledge of chamber music. The Preucil School, located in Iowa City, IA, seeks to provide excellence in music and early childhood education based on the Suzuki philosophy of instruction.

Houses on the Moon Theater Company (Emily Joy Weiner, Co-Founder & Artistic Director; Kevin Connor, Managing Director)  will present two world premiere productions in repertory developed through company workshops: The Assignment, a new original play by Camilo Almonacid, directed by Emily Joy Weiner, is a co-production with Rhymes Over Beats (Patrick Blake, Artistic Director; Cate Cammarata, Associate Artistic Director), and will be performed in repertory with gUN COUNTRY, curated by Jeffery Solomon and Emily Joy Weiner, written, developed and performed by Houses On The Moon company members and directed by Jenna Worsham.

Performances are set to begin Wednesday, April 19, 2017 for a limited engagement through Sunday, May 7, 2017.  Opening night for The Assignment is Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 7:30pm.   The productions are being staged at the Jeffrey and Paula Gural Theatre at the A.R.T./New York Theatres (502 West 53rd Street).

The Assignment was inspired by a remarkable friendship between two individuals brought together by storytelling workshops facilitated by Houses on the Moon Theater Company: A woman who founded a youth violence prevention program after her teenage son was murdered by street violence, and a man who found education and rehabilitation while serving 17 years in prison for manslaughter. Though a fictionalization, the seeds of the play were born from a mother’s desire to understand what caused another to take her son’s life, and a man’s need to express remorse and to try to reach lost young people before they take arms. The play explores the long-term emotional toll of violence from both sides of the gun barrel, and the struggle to forgive others and ourselves.  The Assignment was developed in part at SPACE on Ryder Farm and as part of the Theater Resources Unlimited Play Reading Series.

The Assignment will play the following performance schedule:  Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m., Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 2:00 p.m. & 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m.  There is a special Wednesday performance on April 19 at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets for The Assignment are priced at $35 (plus $2 ticketing fee) with Premium Seats available at $55 (plus $2 ticketing fee) that includes a meet & greet with a member of the company after the performance.  For Groups of 10+, contact groups@housesonthemoon.org, or call (929) 335-3261.  Student Rush: $20 cash-only, ID required, subject to availability.
