Sunday Scoop Week of 12/11/16 - What's Happening This Week or Coming Up Soon

Mother Africa: My Home at the New Victory Theater
209 W. 42nd St.
New York, NY

This holiday season, experience the joyous spirit of Mother Africa: My Home, an all-new circus spectacular set in Cape Town’s largest township, Khayelitsha. Returning with their latest show, the 2014 Drama Desk nominee for Unique Theatrical Experience brings its vibrant mix of modern circus acts with African dance and music to The New Victory Theater from December 2, 2016 to January 1, 2017.

Mother Africa: My Home celebrates the hustle, vitality and energetic atmosphere of everyday life in a South African township. A diverse cast of 26 acrobats, musicians and dancers from different countries throughout the African continent transform the New Victory stage into a bustling marketplace filled with breathtaking feats, exuberant afro-beats and a swirl of colorful bazin and kitenge fabrics. The rare Icarian Games from Ethiopia--in which foot jugglers toss fellow cast mates into the air--appear alongside a body-bending contortionist, an African Gumboot dance and more than a dozen awe-inspiring acts. Throughout the show, a live band keeps the party going with every strike of the congas and strum of the kora, showcasing Africa’s expressive dance culture.

Rich in rhythm and robust in song, Mother Africa has earned rave reviews around the globe and has performed for millions worldwide since the company’s debut in 2006. A portion of the company’s profits benefit charities in Khayelitsha, including organizations engaging HIV-positive children with circus arts.

The performers of Mother Africa received their training at director Winston Ruddle’s African Acrobatic Academy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Young people who exhibit significant talent are invited to study a suitable artistic discipline and participate in a program where all materials, meals and daily transportation to and from the school are paid for by the Academy. Over the years, Ruddle has trained over 150 young African performers, and for most of them, the African Acrobatic Academy is an opportunity to escape the poverty of their homeland. The young performers’ dedication to their art form and cultural heritage translates into an effusive and seemingly inexhaustible joy for performance.

Puppetkabob: The Snowflake Man
Saturday, December 17 at 11 am and 2 pm
Tickets are $17 ($14 for members)

This colorful puppet production is inspired by Wilson "Snowflake" Bentley, the self-educated farmer and scientist who attracted world attention when he became the first person to photograph a single snow crystal. This child-friendly show brings audiences into the historic 1920s through creative storytelling, intricately designed Czech-style marionettes, and a striking pop-up book of watercolor scenery. A UNIMA-USA award winner, it combines art, science, and a little known piece of American history to magical effect. Puppetmaster Sarah Frechette has been a public television show puppeteer and has designed costumes for LAIKA studios (ParaNorman, etc.) She founded her award-winning company Puppetkabob, and now tours internationally. Puppetkabob blends science and history with puppetry arts to create a dynamic and interactive theater experience. Visit www.puppetkabob.com to learn more, and view the trailer HERE.

THE PRESENT

By Andrew Upton, after Anton Chekhov’s Platonov

Starring Cate Blanchett and Richard Roxburgh

Directed by John Crowley

Previews begin December 17, 2016

Opens on January 8, 2017
at Broadway’s Barrymore Theatre

THE PRESENT will begin previews on Broadway Saturday, December 17, 2016 and open Sunday, January 8, 2017 at the Barrymore Theatre on Broadway and will play a limited engagement through Sunday, March 19, 2017.

Variously known as Platonov, Wild Honey, Fatherlessness and The Disinherited, Anton Chekhov’s first play was not discovered until 1920, some 16 years after the playwright’s death.  Andrew Upton’s adaptation is set post-Perestroika in the mid-1990s at an old country house where friends gather to celebrate the birthday of the independent but compromised widow Anna Petrovna (Blanchett).  At the center is the acerbic and witty Platonov (Roxburgh) with his wife, his former students and friends and their partners.  They may appear comfortable, but boiling away inside is a mess of unfinished, unresolved relationships, fuelled by twenty years of denial, regret and thwarted desire.

GEORGE TAKEI INVITES ELECTED OFFICIALS TO
LOCAL SCREENINGS OF ALLEGIANCE
IN RESPONSE TO TRUMP SURROGATE’S
JAPANESE-AMERICAN INTERNMENT COMMENTS

In reaction to remarks on national television by Trump-campaign surrogate Carl Higbie citing the Japanese-American internment as a precedent for the Trump Administration’s proposed registry of Muslims in America, actor and activist George Takei is responding by denouncing the comments as dangerous and by inviting elected officials across America to attend a film screening of Allegiance, the Broadway musical inspired by Takei's true life experience.  Allegiance exposes the harrowing and oft-overlooked chapter of American history concerning the unjust incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans, mostly US citizens, who were placed in internment camps by the United States government in the aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Filmed during its celebrated Broadway run Allegiance, will be distributed by Fathom Events for a one-night special event in over 600 cinemas around the country on Tuesday, December 13 at 7.30pm local time.  In the Takei and the producers of Allegiance formally invited all mayors, state legislators, governors, and US Representatives and Senators in each of the currently programmed locations to attend a screening of Allegiance in their community, on December 13th
