Where-To-Go Wednesday - Sleepover at the Battleship New Jersey and A Class Act

You may know that many fun locations offer sleepovers for scouting groups, but did you know that many of these locations offer sleepovers for family groups as well? This week we will be talking about family sleepovers offered by The Battleship New Jersey. In future posts, we will be talking about other family sleepovers.

We were given a free sleepover at The Battleship New Jersey for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Sleepover at the Battleship New Jersey 

Where: 62 Battleship Place

             Camden, New Jersey

Who: Ages 6 and up 

Mom's view: Overnights on the Battleship New Jersey are youth oriented and therefore, all groups must include at least one child between the ages of 6 and 18. Groups can be scouting groups or families and group size can be as little as two people. Be prepared to get a lot of exercise and wear comfortable shoes as you will spend a lot of time walking up and down narrow staircases.  You will get to sleep in the actual bunks that the sailors assigned to the ship slept on. They are not the most comfortable beds but sleeping in them does make you realize how hard it was for the sailors who had to sleep in those beds for long periods of time and not for just one night. You also get to eat where the sailors ate. The food served at the overnights is good and caters to children's tastes including such things as chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese, and chocolate chip cookies. Breakfast the next morning is also included. While scouting groups have to help serve the meals, if they want to earn merit badges, families can just sit back and relax and be served. An approximately 90 minute guided tour is included as part of your overnight. The tour mostly focuses on the ship's role as a Battleship. However, there is also a self guided tour you can take, if you want to know even more about what life was actually like living on the ship. Also, as part of your overnight, you will get a free ride in the flight simulator, it is not actually located on the ship itself so your ride will take place before you embark on the ship or after you disembark. You will also participate in morning and evening colors so be prepared to wake up early. If you are afraid of getting motion sickness, the ship is never actually in motion and even though sometimes when you are on a ship you can feel the motion even when you are not actually moving, we never really felt it on the Battleship even though some members of our family have been known to get motion sick. All in all, one night on the Battleship New Jersey is a lot of fun, but it will make you appreciate your house and your bed and give you a new appreciation of the hard life of sailor in the Navy.

What: A Class Act

Where: New World Stages

Who: Recommended for 16 and above

When: Now through September 4

Mom's view: If you love a good legal drama, you'll love A Class Act. The show, like many of the legal thriller novels of today, was written by a former lawyer. However, in one of those novels everything is usually wrapped up by the last page. In A Class Act, however, that is not the case so if you like your entertainment with neatly wrapped up endings where every issue raised in the show is resolved, this might not be the show for you. On the other hand, if you love a heavy drama that raises important issues than you will like it The show deals particularly with the issue of  what happens when a large chemical company poisons drinking water causing death and/or grievous harm to a large number of people. This is an issue that is very much in the news these days so if you like your plays to be topical you should really enjoy this show. This is not a show for young children although older teens particularly those interested in the law might like it.
