Where-To-Go Wednesday - Monmouth Park Family Day and Finding Neverland

What: Family Day

Where: 175 Oceanport Ave.
            Oceanport, NJ

Who: All ages
Mom's view: Every Sunday and holiday from Memorial Day to Labor Day is Family Fun Day at Monmouth Park. Family Fun Day is great for all ages. There are lot of fun activities to participate in including pony rides, face painting. and a bounce house. There are also may be clowns and live music. Best of all it's all free with admittance to the park, and admittance to the park is free to children under 12. For adults and children over 12, admission to the Grandstand is only $5.00. That makes all this fun practically free.   Food, however, is not free and if it is hot day it can be really hot at the track. What: Finding Neverland

Where: Lunt-Fontanne Theatre
             205 W. 46th St.
             New York, NY
Who: Recommended for 10 and up

When: Now through August 21, 2016 only
Mom's view: Finding Neverland is the story of James Barrie's creation of Peter Pan. The show is based on the movie of the same name. This is another movie to musical adaption that works. The songs definitely add to the plot and many of them are memorable and worth listening to again. There are beautiful ballads like When You're Feet Don't Touch the Ground, and If the World Turns Upside Down as well as fun upbeat songs like Believe, We Own the Night and Play. Even though, the story is based on James Barrie's life, his famous characters including Peter Pan, Captain Hook and Tinkerbell do make an appearance in the show. Children will enjoy that as well as the four talented young boys starring in the show as the Llewlyn Davis boys. However, the show deals with some heavy themes including the death of the boys' father and the fatal illness of their mother making it a poor choice for very young children who may get upset by certain plot points. The other problem with the show is that it is often difficult to understand what is being sung particularly during the chorus numbers. The voices are all beautiful though particularly that of Laura Michelle Kelly who plays the boys mother, Sylvia Llewyn Davis. Ms. Kelly is rare performer who not only originated the role she plays but remains in that role over a year later. At this point, since the show is nearing the end of its run, she will probably continue in the role until the end. The show will end on August 21, 2016 so if you want the opportunity to see this enchanting show before it closes don't delay go as soon as you can.
