WOMEN ON THE EDGE

Three artists converge for an evening celebrating remarkable women as subjects or creators of contemporary art.

WHAT: A reception celebrating three groundbreaking artists collaborating to bring attention to the importance of creativity, originality and innovation. Upcycled glass artist Kathleen Plate, famed choreographer Pascal Rioult, and mixed media painter Kristen Jongen will exhibit and discuss their work in the context of the essential culture of creativity.

Kathleen Plate, of Smart Glass Art,  will showcase a collection of custom designed pieces including a 27' glass chandelier made from recycled bottles.  Plate's innovative concepts have been commissioned by the Guggenheim Museum, The Coca Cola Company, Intercontinental Hotel Group and numerous private collectors.  From chandeliers to runway fashion gowns,  she transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary by creating functional and sophisticated works of art.

Pascal Rioult, artistic director of RIOULT Dance NY, will speak about his latest work, Women on the Edge...Unsung Heroines of the Trojan War premiering at the Joyce Theater June 21-26.  The modern dance triptych pays homage to the emotional strength of Iphigenia, Helen of Troy, and Cassandra in three separate abstracted narratives. Rioult gathers inspiration from his mentor, Martha Graham, yet turns it on its ear in these three distinctive and athletic works. On display will be a selection of work by photographer Sophia Negron who has been documenting Rioult's evocative, female-driven creative process spanning the last 4 years and who's latest collection of images will offer a visual sneak peek into the company's upcoming NY season.

Kristen Jongen will showcase a new series of painted cityscapes, which survey the creative visions of the tenants that live inside. These works are a departure from the more lyrical style Jongen is internationally known for. Jongen's work has been featured in The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Huffington Post, and many other North American publications. She has authored two books, Growing Wings: A view from inside the cocoon, and Attempting Flight: Upside down without a net.

WHEN:  Thursday April 21st, from 7-10pm.

WHERE: Bene Rialto, 13 West 38th street, NYC

All artwork will be available for public viewing and sale from April 18-24 at Bene Rialto, A New York City Marketplace, located at 13 West 38th street.  Store hours: Mon- Sat 11am -7pm, closed Sunday. Phone: 212-246-5984

Rockitaerials presents
the New York City Premiere of
Circo de la Luna
Rose Nagel Theater, Baruch Performing Arts Center
April 21-22, 2016 at 7:30pm
Rockitaerials presents the New York City premiere of Circo de la Luna on April 21-22, 2016 at 7:30pm at the Rose Nagelburg Theater, Baruch Performing Arts Center, 55 Lexington Ave, New York, NY.   Tickets start at $45 and can be purchased at http://www.baruch.cuny.edu/calendar/ or by calling Ovationtix at 866-811-4111.
Inspired by Norton Juster's The Phantom Tollbooth, Circo de la Luna is a moonstruck circus journey that incorporates flamenco, aerial moon, tissù and lyra, contortion, clowning and boleadoras to tell the story of a disgruntled New York City dweller who receives a mysterious package in the mail and is whisked away on a magical journey to Spain, Cuba, and beyond. Performed in front of a projected backdrop of lush architectural images created by the photographer Thierry Dehove, Circo de la Luna transports audiences with the hypnotic rhythm of an antique carousel slide projector, sharing the beauty of Spanish and Latin music and landscapes, inspiring us all to explore the beauty of other cultures - near or far.

Circo de la Luna is an original hybrid circus created by NYC-based aerialist Amanda Topaz in Partnership with Sonia Olla.  Acts will include comedy by Mark Gindick (Wingman and Big Apple Circus), Boleadoras by AJ Silver (Hungarian National Circus), Aerial Moon and Silk by Amanda Topaz (Rockitaerials), Aerial Hoop by Sarah Sophie Flicker (Citizen's Band), Contortion by Anna Venizelos of the Venizelos Sistersand Olga
Karmansky. Aerial choreography by Sonia Olla and Ballet Hispanico choreographer Pedro Ruiz, directed by Mark Lonergan (Parallel Exit and Big Apple Circus).

About Circo de la Luna
Circo de la Luna is a cross-cultural circus charged with Flamenco and latin music, created by NYC aerialist Amanda Topaz in partnership with the Spanish flamenco dancer Sonia Olla.  Originally created for a Latin Audience in Atlantic City, Circo de la Luna grew to include the salsa music of Celia Cruz and tango of Astor Piazzolla, making it a circus night for Latin Music lovers of three continents. The idea of Circo de la Luna is to introduce circus acts to traditional dance choreographers to create a thought-provoking circus for Spanish and Latin Music lovers and children of all ages.  The name "Circo de la Luna" was born out of wanting to create the Spanish equivalent to the incomparable Cirque du Soleil.  Circo de la Luna celebrates the love of foreign neighbors, culture, music and dance - especially Flamenco. WORLD PREMIERE OF
ANDREW LIPPA’S
“I AM ANNE HUTCHINSON” / “I AM HARVEY MILK”
STARRING
KRISTIN CHENOWETH AND ANDREW LIPPA

TWO NIGHTS ONLY

APRIL 23 & 24
AT MARYLAND’S
MUSIC CENTER AT STRATHMORE

Rolando Sanz and Strathmore, in association with Bruce Cohen, Robb Nanus and David Bloch are pleased to present the world premiere of I Am Anne Hutchinson/I Am Harvey Milka musical celebration of two American icons, for a two-night engagement on Saturday, April 23 and Sunday, April 24, 2016 at the Music Center at Strathmore (5301 Tuckerman Lane, North Bethesda, Maryland). This event marks the first time these pieces will be performed together, and the world premiere of Grammy and Tony Award-nominated composer, Andrew Lippa’s newest work, I Am Anne Hutchinson. Part choral work, part theater piece, this production will feature Broadway superstar Kristin Chenoweth, reprising her role in I Am Harvey Milk, and debuting I Am Anne Hutchinson’s title role. Joining her onstage will be Andrew Lippa himself. Chenoweth will debut a piece from I Am Anne Hutchinson in January 2016 during a solo concert at the Music Center at Strathmore.
I Am Harvey Milk, originally commissioned by the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, weaves the story of Milk’s life–from boyhood to his rise as the first openly gay man to hold public office in California, and finally, to his assassination. Andrew Lippa’s soaring melodies and lyrics have already sold out houses in Los Angeles’s Disney Concert Hall and New York City’s Lincoln Center. Now, I Am Harvey Milk makes its Washington, D.C. debut, where so many political opinions, legislative decisions, and, most recently, a landmark Supreme Court ruling, have impacted the LGBT community.

I Am Harvey Milk will be presented alongside the world premiere of Lippa’s newest work, I Am Anne Hutchinson.Hutchinson is widely considered the mother of women’s rights and religious tolerance in America. In 1637, she was tried for insubordination to the patriarchal church, for the “sin” of forming women’s study groups. While she was branded a radical, like Harvey Milk centuries later, her tragic end only strengthened her legend, furthering her cause of women’s independence.

I Am Anne Hutchinson/I Am Harvey Milk features music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa, direction by Noah Himmelstein, and music direction by Joel Fram.
