When Words Fail Music Speaks/ A Holocaust Narrative
at Manhattan College
Manhattan College
Manhattan College Parkway
Riverdale NY 10471

On April 12th at 5 pm
Holocaust, Genocide and Interfaith Center at Manhattan College in the Bronx
"When Words Fail, Music Speaks / A Holocaust Narrative'.

This is a one-act play based on the true story of Jewish-Czech composer, Raphael Schachter, an organizer of cultural life in the Terezin ghetto, Hitler's model concentration camp near Prague.  It depicts his preparation of doomed chorus members to perform Verdi's Requiem for an audience of Nazi officials.
Through his music, he raised the spirits of the prisoners in the camp and enabled them to escape the horrors and depravity that was their everyday life, if only for a moment.
He also damned the Nazis through his interpretation of Requiem which became a mutiny against their tyranny.  A musical equivalent of a riot..
Presented in two scenes, this powerful and dramatic play gives the audience the opportunity to witness the event as it unfolds.  It is both historical and educational. You see it, you hear it, you feel it and you live it!!!

It will be presented in Hayden Hall in the first floor lecture hall.  There is no charge for the event.

The Pop Ups Debut ‘Great Pretenders Club
 City Winery
155 Varick St
New York, NY

Sunday, April 17 at 11 am, and Sunday , May 22 at 11 am.
The Pop Ups, a Brooklyn based, twice Grammy nominated duo, will debut songs from their newest album, Great Pretenders Clubwith two all-ages shows at City Winery.
A collaboration between Jason Rabinowitz and Jacob Stein, The Pop Ups have been setting the standard for children’s music since 2010. The two-time GRAMMY Award nominees for Best Children’s Album have also received a National Parenting Publications Award, Parents’ Choice Award and praise from NPR's All Things Considered, The Huffington Post, and USA Today among others. They have toured with Yo Gabba Gabba Live and continue to perform their rock and roll puppet musical live show to sold-out audiences across the United States, including shows in Washington DC and an Amazon Music sponsored "Think about Music" show during SXSW Music festival in Austin this spring.

The Pop Ups new 11-song album, Great Pretenders Club is available exclusively from Amazon Music. The Pop Ups invite fans everywhere to join their "Great Pretenders Club" to get ideas for further singing, dancing and playing, plus earn badges for their creativity. The album was selected as one of the 10 best of 2015 by the annual Fids and Kamily critics’ poll, and the video “Bird and Rhino” was endorsed by Kids First! The new “Great Pretenders Club Special” is available for free streaming to Amazon Prime subscribers, and new music videos are posting on The Pop Ups’ YouTube channel.
Through dance-able electro-pop beats, puppetry, animation, and smart lyrics, The Pop Ups continue to engage fans with songs that will spark imagination and creativity. Great Pretenders Club is inspired by the essential role of play in childhood development. Play is deeply tied to how animals (including human animals!) learn, adapt, and socialize. The Pop Ups wrote these songs to engage children (and bears) in imaginative play as a means of exploration and learning. The Pop Ups consulted noted biologist and animal ethologist Marc Bekoff PhD to write lyrics to reflect animal behavior and the human-centered "science of play." Guest artists include GRAMMY nominated multi-instrumentalist, composer and lyricist Bernhoft and the indie band HAERTS. Children’s voices and characters from The Pop Ups’ puppet family also contribute to the joyous wall of sound. Tap into your wild creative power and see the world in a new way with The Pop Ups.

For more information about the shows or to order tickets go to citywinery.com or call (212) 608-0555.
