Where-To-Go Wednesday - Radio City Christmas Spectacular and Spring Awakening

What: The Radio City Christmas Spectacular

Where: Radio City Music Hall
              1260 6th Ave.
               New York, NY

When: Now through January 3, 2015

Who: All ages

Mom's view: The Radio City Christmas Spectacular is a definitely a song and dance extravaganza. If you are looking for a show with a plot, you won't find much of that here. There are a few scenes  that are loosely joined by a slight plot. However, most of the show just floats along from song and/or dance number to song and/or dance number. The singing is nice enough but there are no stand out singers or well known stars here.  The dancing is what this show is known for as the Radio City Rockettes are clearly the stars of the show.  Their dancing is wonderful as always and definitely worth the price of admission. If you celebrate Christmas, you will love this show because from the Christmas songs to the red and green costumes to the appearance of Santa, there is not a moment in this show that lets you forget that it is all about Christmas. If you don't celebrate Christmas, at times it might all be a bit much for you. However, it is called the Christmas Spectacular after all, and no matter what winter holidays you do or don't celebrate, if you have the opportunity to see the Rockettes live, you should definitely take it. We were given free tickets to Spring Awakening for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own based on our experience.
What: Spring Awakening

Where: Brooks Atkinson Theatre
            256 W. 47th Street
            New York, NY

When: Now through January 24, 2015

Who: Teens and above

Mom's view: Marlee Matlin and Camryn Manheim may be the well known names in this cast and they are both good in the show. However, the real reason to see this show is the less well known young people appearing along side them. This show seamlessly integrates deaf and hearing actors often times with two actors playing the same part; one signing and the other speaking and singing. The actors are all great.  Austin P. McKenzie leads the way. He speaks, signs and sings all without missing a beat or dropping a line or nuance of character. The show is definitely worth seeing for the talent of its cast. It is also worth seeing as a role model for what true diversity in theater is like. In addition to the mix of deaf and hearing actors, the show includes the first person in a wheelchair to appear on a Broadway stage, Ali Stroker, known for the Glee Project and an episode of Glee. We definitely would not recommend this show for children under 13 due to very mature themes. However, if you are not a little kid and you want to see a truly unique and special show, we would highly recommend this show. If you are interested,  get your tickets sooner rather than later as the show will only be running through January 24. And that's mom's view. See tomorrow's Talking Topics post for Melia's view of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.
