Reading Into History Family Book Club: Courage Has No Color by Tanya Lee Stone
Featuring Triple Nickle Paratrooper, Kenneth Smith
Veterans Day Family Program
Free with Museum admission
Ages 9 - 12

In honor of Veterans Day, join Reading into History family book club to learn about and honor the Triple Nickles, the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, America’s first black paratroopers. Kenneth Smith, a Triple Nickle since 1947 will be here in person to answer your questions. Author Tanya Lee Stone will also join us via Skype to discuss her book. After Q&A, everyone will explore artifacts related to the history of black military service in our Patricia Klingenstein Library.

About Courage Has No Color
“What is courage? What is strength? Perhaps it is being ready to fight for your nation even when your nation isn’t ready to fight for you.” So ends the first chapter of this fascinating work of non-fiction exploring the struggles and triumphs of the men who formed the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, America’s first black paratroopers. Early in WWII, senior officials doubted the ability of African American men to perform combat roles. This daring battalion's struggle to prove themselves on the battlefield, and the bittersweet results of that struggle, highlight the frustrating, slow pace of racial progress during the 1940s. Meticulously researched, readers will see why this gripping work won a 2014 NAACP Image Award and multiple starred reviews.

About the Reading into History Family Book Club
Each month families read a historical fiction or nonfiction book together at home, then attend a Book Wrap event where they will share reactions to the book, see cool Museum artifacts and documents related to the book, and meet other history detectives and special guests! Past special guests have included authors Walter Dean Myers, Avi, and Rita Williams-Garcia, plus Museum curators, historians, and other experts.

"Fantasia" - 75th Anniversary Screening Throughout history, there have been but a handful of groundbreaking films where the soundtrack has become inextricably linked to the cinematic achievement of the film itself. There is perhaps no greater example of this marriage than Walt Disney’s 1940 masterpiece, "Fantasia."  Disney animators set pictures to Western classical music as Leopold Stokowski conducts the Philadelphia Orchestra. "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" features Mickey Mouse as an aspiring magician who oversteps his limits. "The Rite of Spring" tells the story of evolution, from single-celled animals to the death of the dinosaurs. "Dance of the Hours" is a comic ballet performed by ostriches, hippos, elephants, and alligators. "Night on Bald Mountain" and "Ave Maria" set the forces of darkness and light against each other as a devilish revel is interrupted by the coming of a new day. The screening will include a newly recorded behind-the-scenes look from the orchestra’s rehearsals, and Yannik Nezet-Seguin will lead a discussion about the history of Stokowski and "Fantasia."
