Sun, May 10th, 2015 | 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Ages 5 and up; $11 per child ($5 per Member child) and $19 per adult (free per Member adult)
How do you feed a fledgling? Get some practice at this totally unique program co-produced by the DiMenna Children's History Museum and the Wild Bird Fund. To mark the final day New-York Historical's special exhibition Audubon’s Aviary: The Final Flight (Part III of the Complete Flock) the Wild Bird Fund (WBF) will come to the Museum to teach us all about our neighbors with nests. Participants will see a presentation about the bird life of New York City and wild bird rehabilitation, feed a baby bird in the WBF’s care, and have the option of crafting nests for baby bird patients. This program has an age restriction for the safety of the birds that will be handled and fed by children in attendance. Children must be age five and up to feed the birds.
About the Wild Bird Fund: Each year, the Wild Bird Fund, a non-profit 501(c)(3), provides emergency care for over 1,000 wild birds and animals in New York City. Working with the Center for Avian and Exotic Medicine, two veterinary hospitals across the street, the Wild Bird Fund is the central resource in NYC for wildlife emergency care and rehabilitation.

Reading Into History: Salt by Helen Frost
Sun, May 31st, 2015 | 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm
Recommended for families with kids ages 9-12; free with museum admission
Helen Frost brings us a rare story, written completely in verse, of two boys growing up in the Indiana Territory in 1812. Anikwa and James’ worlds are the same and totally different. When the burgeoning war between America and Great Britain occurs in their backyard at Fort Wayne, precious trade commodities like salt become scarce, threatening the lives of Anikwa’s Miami tribe and new settlers like James. Frost shows us how the War of 1812 divided native and settler communities who had enjoyed a brief period of mutual dependence, and gives readers a peek at a conflict rarely explored in schools. Come discuss Indiana Territory and the War of 1812 with author Helen Frost. After discussion and Q&A, families will get to visit the galleries and explore artifacts from the War of 1812, including a model ship with a fascinating past.
