Tips for Tuesday - Books: Shadows of Glory & How Broadway Works; & Movie: Quintessentially Irish

Books: Shadows of Glory & How Broadway Works

Today we are talking about Shadows of Glory by Dave Brown and Jeff Rodimer. This book discloses fascinating stories involving the World Series. It includes stories about players who were little known before the World Series but played a crucial role in a team's victory, as well as about a player who left the ballpark without permission in the middle of a game, and more. It also includes stories about things that affected the outcome of the World Series like shoe polish, the Spanish flu, and World War I. Even though the stories are fascinating,  it can be hard for some to get through the book. It is extremely detailed and numerous baseball games are described down to the tiniest details. Thus, if you are a big fan of baseball statistics and reliving games in detail, you will enjoy it. However, if you are a casual fan of the game or too many statistics make your eyes gloss over and your head ache, you may find it difficult to get through.

Today we are talking about How Broadway Works by Sharon Grace Powers. This is an extremely detailed book about Broadway-related jobs besides acting. It includes lighting, costume, and makeup related jobs, and much more. It thoroughly explains the differences between subcategories of jobs as well.  For example, if you have always wanted to know the difference between a set designer and an associate set designer, you can find it in this book. Some jobs are broken down even further into highly specialized areas. For instance, the chapter on costumes includes sections on beading, body padding, and several more specialized areas. 

If you know you want to work in theater but do not know what you want to do, this book can be an invaluable resource. Even if you are not interested in working in the theater, this is still an interesting book especially if you are a big theater fan. It is so thorough, however, that if you read it from cover to cover at times it may make your head swim as you try to take in all the details of every job covered.

Movies: Quintessentially Irish

Today we are talking about Quintessentially Irish. This is a film that delves into absolutely everything associated with the Irish and being Irish. It is comprised mostly of clips of interviews with various people who are mostly Irish themselves but some are not. They include universally well-known people like Pierce Brosnan, Prince Albert of Monaco, and Jeremy Irons, people known within a specific field or area like Irish politicians, and even some who are well known at all.  The film is somewhat fascinating but if you are not Irish and you are not particularly interested in everything to do with the Irish,  after a while, it just gets to be too much, especially with an almost two-hour running time. 

Quintessentially Irish is available for purchase or rental digitally now.

More Theater Monday - Bathhouse.PPTX

We were given complimentary tickets to Bathhouse.PPTX for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Who: Recommended for Ages 18 and Up 

When: Through April 22, 2024

Bathhouse.PPTX starts out as an amusing look at the history of cleanliness but quickly devolves into something much darker about the history of gay bathhouses. While the loneliness and need for connection of the men who inhabited these historic locations is relatable, the excess of full-frontal male nudity and graphic simulations of sex in this show will probably be too much for some people, and they also make the show extremely unsuitable for children. 

In a time when some would like nothing better than to force others back into the closet, the show is extremely timely. It reminds us that even though we have obviously not yet achieved true equality we must continue to strive forward and not go backward.
