Still More Theater Saturday - Two Sisters and a Piano

Who: Recommended for Ages 16 and Up

Two Sisters and a Piano is the story of two sisters, Maria Celia and Sophia, under house arrest in Cuba during the 1990s. They are waiting to see if Maria Celia's husband in America can get them out of Cuba. Meanwhile, a soldier maneuvers his way into their lives especially that of Maria Celia.

The playwright does not really do a good job of setting the background of the story.  We would highly recommend carefully perusing the description of the play before you attend even if you would normally just glance over it because there is a lot of information there that will not be clear if you are unfamiliar with the time and place just from seeing the play. You might also want to read up on what was happening in Cuba at that time because that is not really made clear by the play either. 

The play is mostly very dark in subject matter pretty much from start to finish.  However, the two main characters are admirably strong and resilient women. They are brilliantly played by Eden Espinosa as Marie Celia and Helen Cespedes as Sophia respectively. Jason Manuel Glazabal as Lt. Portundo and Hiram Delgado as both Victor Manuel and a militia guard are qually good in their roles as well. In fact, the performances are the main reason to see this show.

Theater Thursday - Lizard Boy

Who: Recommended for Ages 12 and Up

When: Through July 1, 2023

Lizard Boy is the story of a boy who turns into a lizard after an encounter with a dragon in kindergarten. It is a kind of modern superhero story. However, there is more it than that. It is also about accepting yourself for who you are warts and all as well as accepting others for who they are and treating them with compassion. Not having the actor playing Lizard Boy dressed in an elaborate Lizard costume, but leaving most of it to the audience's imagination instead only enhances this idea of acceptance of oneself and others. On the inside, we are all the same. It is only our outward manifestations that make us treat each other differently.

Although the story may get a little confusing at times, there is a lot of heart at its center. The cast and orchestra are one. They not only act, sing, and dance (well there is not really a lot of dance in the show more like stylized action movie moves), but they each play not one but a multitude of instruments as well. The music is incredible. The songs themselves and the voices are nice too especially that of Kiki deLohr singing  A Terrible Ride. The latter is an aural experience not to be missed. All in all, for many reasons Lizard Boy is a quite enjoyable show.

Where-To-Go Wednesday - Sports More Than Just a Game

What: Sports More Than Just a Game 

Where: Greenwich Historical Society 

             47 Strickland Rd

             Cos Cob, CT

Who: All ages

When: Through September 3, 2023

The exhibit, Sports More Than Just a Game, currently on display at the Greenwich Historical Society as the title suggests is more than just about people playing games. It is about the important role sports plays in society. At times, they reflect what is going on in society, and at times, they impact change. Among other things, they help break barriers including gender and racial barriers.

Of course, with that being said, sports are still fun and still an opportunity for talented athletes to attempt to achieve their best. This exhibit celebrates that as well with an emphasis on athletes who have some connection to the local area. Perfect game pitcher, David Cone;  Olympic Gold Medalists, Dorothy Hamill and Donna De Varona, these are only a few of the athletes covered in this engaging exhibit. Memorabilia on display includes an Olympic torch, a Cy Young Award, numerous jerseys, and so much more. If you are a sports fan, you won't want to miss it.
