Funtivity Friday- Art Projects: Paper People

Here is a fun way to make a person out of paper.

What you will need:

Colored paper

Marker and/or crayons

Tape or glue

Scissors

What to do:

1) Draw and cut a head and hands out of colored paper.

2) Draw and cut hair out of black paper.

3) Draw and cut a shirt out of blue paper.

4) Draw and cut a vest and a crown out of green paper

5) Draw and cut a pants out of purple paper.

6) Glue or tape the hair to the head.

7) Glue or tape the crown to the hair.

8) Glue or tape the vest to the shirt.

9) Glue or tape the head to the shirt.

10) Glue or tape the hands to the shirt.

11) Glue or tape the pants to the shirt.

12) Create details as necessary, such as a face, with markers or crayons.

These directions are for the paper person above. However, any of the colors can be changed, the size of the paper person can be changed (ours was large) or you can make completely your own paper person by deciding on your own clothing etc. that you will need and how you will decorate it. It may help to make a sketch of what you plan to make before you start cutting out pieces.

Coney Island Museum

We were given free tickets to The Coney Island Museum for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Me - The Coney Island Museum was decent. They had a bunch of fun house mirrors. It was fun looking at myself in them. One made me look bigger. One made me look shorter. One made me look taller. One made my legs look longer. They had a lot of pictures and things from amusement parks and beaches and stuff. I liked looking like at the prices and seeing how little things cost then. I also liked looking at the old amusement park rides They were cool. The bumper cars were so big and roomy which is ironic since usually things are bigger now. They had postcards that could light up two ways. One way it looked like night and one it looked like day. They were pretty when they lit up. They had a 3D model of the old Luna Park Amusement Park. It was interesting, but it didn't look like an amusement park because there were no rides. They had a lot of old silent films playing. They were documentaries about the way Coney Island used to be. Some of them were interesting.  The Coney Island Museum is a good way to learn about the history of Coney Island.

Where-To-Go Wednesday - Bonnie and Clyde The Musical and Coney Island Museum

Who: Teens and older

Mom's view: Bonnie and Clyde did not play very long on Broadway. Despite that it is a decent show, and Pierrot Productions at Kelsey Theatre does an admirable job with it. Bonnie Parker  as portrayed by Jordan Virgil is a wide eyed eager girl who just wants to be famous no matter how she achieves that goal. Clyde Barrow portrayed by Michael Lovett is a desperate man whose cynical view is that there is no other way for him but a life of crime, The music overall is not very memorable, but the show does contain some nice duets. There is a sweet ballad sung by Bonnie and Clyde's sister-in-law, Blanche called  You Love Who You Love. There is another more upbeat duet sung by Bonnie and Clyde called Too Late Too Turn Back Now. Of course, at its heart this is a show about vicious thieves and murderers so of course, the plot does involve violence which makes the show a poor choice for young children. However, in light of the state of the world today and recent circumstances particularly, the violence is downplayed as much as possible. There are no lingering dramatic stage deaths here nor are there any signs of fake blood or anything like it. The violence is presented as quickly and matter-of-factly as possible. What: Coney Island Museum

Where: 1208 Surf Avenue

            Coney Island, NY

Who: All ages

Mom's view: The Coney Island Museum is not very big, but it is full of history.  There are old amusement park rides. There are pictures and postcards including postcards that light up. There are fun house mirrors. There is a 3D model of Luna Park from 100 years ago. The original Luna Park amusement park opened around 1903 in Coney Island. The famous Cyclone wooden rollercoaster opened there in the 1920s and still remains open today at the current Luna Park after a complete refurbishment of the ride in the 1970s.There are also plenty of other artifacts in the museum. In the museum,  you can see historic films including short films by Thomas Edison and films about about the history of Coney Island and the amusements there. If you are interested in the history of amusement parks, resort areas, and or specifically the history of Coney Island, you will love this museum. If you are lucky enough to be there when Jay is working, he can tell you even more about the history of Coney Island. If you start talking to Jay, give yourself a long time at the museum. Otherwise, you will not need a lot of time to go through the museum unless you are particularly into history or want to watch all of the films that are running. The museum is located not far from other well known Coney Island sites like the New York Aquarium, Luna Park, and the original Nathan's. I would not recommend bringing very young children to the museum who would probably be bored and want to touch things. However, slightly older children might enjoy seeing the old amusement park rides and seeing themselves in the fun house mirrors. The fun house mirrors are the only part of the museum that is interactive. Most of the items are unable to be touched or photographed because they are so rare and old.
