The People Versus Lenny Bruce relates the fascinating and yet unsettling true story of the obscenity trial of comedian Lenny Bruce. Although the case itself did not set any legal precedent, it helped shift the legal landscape regarding free speech and what can be considered obscenity. This show is particularly relevant today, when free speech and numerous other rights seem to constantly be under attack.
The show provides a real insider's view of the case, as it was based on the memoir of Martin Garbus, Bruce's lawyer. Garbus is, in fact, a character in the play, and the story is narrated through his eyes. This is the play's downfall, as Stephen Schnetzer in the role of Garbus is the show's weakest link. He seems to have trouble remembering where he is in the show and always appears on the verge of forgetting a line. He did, on at least one occassion actually have to be prompted with the correct line (and this was only a day or two before the show's official opening). It's extremely distracting and takes away from the narrative flow. It's a shame because the other performers in the show are quite good, particularly Johnny Anthony, who brings just the right mix of sarcasm, anger, and sadness to the role of Lenny Bruce. and Dan Grimaldi, who is extremely convincing as Bruce's accuser, CIA agent Herbert Ruhe.
