In a Depression-era Harlem apartment building, a close-knit group of friends has become a chosen family. New roommates Angel and Guy — a recently fired blues singer and a promising costume designer with Paris in his sights — live across the hall from Delia, a social worker who sparks a relationship with the hardworking doctor Sam. Their lives are upturned when Southern newcomer Leland arrives and falls hard for Angel, who is torn between a stable life in New York City and an exhilarating overseas adventure with Guy. Angel chooses her path, but the decision leads to devastating consequences that shift the trajectory of everyone’s futures and long-held dreams.

5) The Cotillion

As six high-achieving debutantes interrupt their preparations to peek into the shimmering ballroom, The Harriet Holland Social Club’s esteemed Madam President does her damnedest to ensure it all goes well. She needs no stumbles tonight. No teary-eyed smudges, no unraveling lace, no unraveling ANYTHING. Because if she can’t control these girls, whatever will they think over at Table 4?

Experienced in real time as a Black debutante ball in a large American city today—and featuring an all-Black-women company and creative team, down to its three-piece band—The Cotillion interrogates the complexities of Black debutante ball culture and finds that beneath all the respectability politics and sweet serenades lie contradictions even quality make-up can’t cover up. It puts us all in our evening shoes—ya know, those fancy ones that start to pinch as the night wears on—to ask how we choose to uplift young Black women in a world that seeks to diminish them.

6) I as another

I as another is Miguel Gutierrez’s newest work, a duet performed with Laila Franklin. The piece takes place in a future/present dystopia and explores the virtual architecture of memory, what it means to be alongside one another, and how existential despair has come into public view. Drawing inspiration from Martinican philosopher Édouard Glissant and his conceptions of Relation and opacity, I as another examines what it means for difference to come into contact and how unknowable we can be.

The ensuing cat-and-mouse game sparks an adventure that includes Vulcan tap dancing, Kirk’s long-lost son (a William Shatner impersonator), and of course… mutant space chickens!

16) The Golden Cage

An award-winning musical about a glorious, mythical cage that’s irresistible from the outside, and inescapable from the inside, The Golden Cage tells the story of two creatures who meet on either side of its bars. Boris, half-man and half-bird, is stranded on the outside after a lifetime searching for the cage. Alphea, trapped on the inside, is a melodramatic diva, who longs for freedom, yet fears the outside and can’t remember how she got trapped inside. Lyrical musical theater meets operetta meets song-cycle, the poignant new musical comedy reflects the cages in which we trap ourselves and the only way we can emerge: through connection to each other.

22) AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY

TO OPEN ITS

RICHARD GILDER CENTER FOR

SCIENCE, EDUCATION, AND INNOVATION

ON MAY 4,

USHERING IN A NEW ERA FOR THE MUSEUM, NEW YORKERS, AND VISITORS FROM

AROUND THE WORLD

Hailed internationally as a soaring architectural achievement, and housing world-class research facilities and scientific collections, next-generation classrooms, and innovative exhibitions, the American Museum of Natural History’s highly anticipated Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation will open to the public on May 4, catapulting the Museum into an exciting new era.

The Gilder Center embodies the Museum’s mission of science and education in every way—from sparking curiosity and wonder through new exhibits in strikingly designed spaces to providing new facilities where research collections, exhibitions, and learning are situated in close proximity, reinforcing the central role of natural history collections in scientific discovery and providing deeper experiences that connect visitors to the evidence and processes of science through engaging exhibits and programs. At the same time, the new building also enhances the visitor experience by establishing continuous pathways through its four-block campus, connecting buildings that were constructed over the course of nearly 150 years.

Designed by Studio Gang, the international architecture and urban design practice led by Jeanne Gang, the Gilder Center is the latest in a series of major projects over the last three decades that have transformed the Museum’s campus, its science, educational and exhibition spaces, and all four facades, including Central Park West (2012 and 2021) and the 77th Street “castle” façade (2009), which have been thoughtfully restored. These include:

  • installation of fourth-floor fossil galleries dedicated to dinosaurs, early vertebrates, and mammals and their extinct ancestors (1996)
  • the development of the Hall of Biodiversity (1998)
  • the creation of the Frederick Phineas and Sandra Priest Rose Center for Earth and Space, housing the new Hayden Planetarium and the David S. and Ruth L. Gottesman Hall of Planet Earth (2000)

MasterVoices concludes its 2022-23 season on May 3 at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium with a concert staging of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera Iolanthe, directed and conducted by Ted Sperling. Iolanthe, with “one of Sullivan’s finest scores” (The New York Times), is a battle of the sexes pitting members of Britain’s House of Lords against the Fairy Queen and her kin, yet its themes are supremely relatable today; it tells of how a minority of landed gentry make rules that dominate the majority, how boorish masculinity disrupts and dominates a tranquil civilization of women, and how all that may still lead to surprising results.

Joining the 120–member MasterVoices chorus and orchestra are some of the brightest stars of the Broadway stage, the cinema and television: silver-tongued Tony Award-nominated veteran David Garrison, who among his many credits previously appeared in MasterVoices’ Song of NorwayKnickerbocker Holiday and The Pirate of Penzance; two-time Tony Award-winning actress Christine Ebersole, who performed in MasterVoices’ The Grapes of Wrath; mezzo soprano Shereen Ahmed, who most recently starred as Eliza Doolittle in the national tour of My Fair Ladyrising “powerful baritone” (The Washington PostSchyler Vargas, whose recent credits include Arizona Opera, Atlanta Opera and Glimmerglass Opera Festival; rising soprano Ashley Fabian, whose “voice is absolutely beautiful” (Scene and Heard International); Tony Award-winning actor Santino Fontana, seen in last season’s MasterVoices sold-out revival of Anyone Can Whistle and also in Song of Norway; stage and concert veteran Jason Danieley, “the most exquisite tenor on Broadway” (The New York Times), who performed in MasterVoices’ production of The Mikado as well as in Song of Norway; and Tony Award-nominated bass Phillip Boykin, most recently seen on Broadway in the revival of The Music Man and who sang in the MasterVoices’ revival of The Pirates of Penzance.

Tickets, priced from $30 to $165, may be purchased online at carnegiehall.org, by calling CarnegieCharge at 212.247.7800 or in person at Carnegie Hall’s box office at 57th and Seventh Avenue beginning Spring 2023.
