When: Through January 5, 2020

Mom's view: Fiddler on the Roof is easily one of the most recognizable musicals in history. Now, a new production of this classic story is playing Off Broadway in New York City. This version is spoken and sung entirely in Yiddish.  However, don't let that scare you away from  seeing this excellent production. Even if you don't speak yiddish the show is definitely still worth seeing. In fact, except for a word or two here and there, I myself do not speak yiddish but I still tremedously enjoyed this show. The acting, singing. and dancing led by the award winning, Steven Skybell in the lead role of Tevye, the dairyman, are all terrific. If you are completely unfamiliar with the story or not very familiar with it, there are easily readable subtitles in both English (and/or Russian if you prefer) to help you keep track of the what is going on. If you are more familiar with the story, it is actually kind of fun to see how much you can translate on your own in your head without looking at the subtitles. No matter how you chose to enjoy this production or no mater what is  the easiest or most convenient way for you, reading the subtitles or not, you won't want to miss this show.

Dad's view: This version of Fiddler on the Roof is the best I have ever seen. I like the way they modernized the story by using more current Yiddish translations. However, they still remained pretty faithful to the original translations. The acting was excellent. I would highly recommend this show.

Where-To-Go Wednesday - Cruise on the Tugboat W.O. Decker

We were given a free cruise on the W.O. Decker for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Cruise on the Tugboat W.O. Decker

Who: Ages 10 and Up

Me- I have never been on a tugboat before let alone a wooden tugboat. I was excited to have the opportunity to take a ride on the W.O. Decker.  It was smaller than any other boat I have ever remember being on. Although, it can take up to 15 passengers at a time, when we went for our cruise, there were only 5 of us. We got to sit in the front of the boat. There weren't seats there, but they had foldable stools that you could use.  You could feel the water a little bit but not a lot. It just felt like little  sprinkles of water. I didn't mind it. The air wasn't too cold, but it was nice and cool. The views of the city were really pretty. For a while, I got to sit with the captain of the boat. That was fun. The whole ride was fun. I enjoyed riding on the W.O. Decker. I really like boat rides.

 
 

Mom - If you are looking for something completely unique and fun to do in New York City, you might want to go for a ride on the W.O. Decker. The W.O. Decker is the last surviving New York built wooden tugboat. She was built in 1930 and has been lovingly restored and is now available for rides at the South Street Seaport. Rides are available to individuals, groups, or families with children age 10 or older and include admission to the South Street Seaport museum. Only the 7:00 PM cruise does not include admission to the museum because the museum is already closed by then. On the boat you can either sit in the cabin or outside. Either way, you will want to bring a jacket even if it is not that cold out because it can be colder out on the water. If you really want to get the full experience of the ride, you will definitely want to sit outside. The views of Manhattan, Governor's Island, the Statue of Liberty and more from the water are just beautiful. Even though the seats on the boat are just portable foldable stools which are not the most comfortable that doesn't take away from the enjoyment of of this one of a kind experience. It is definitely something not to miss!

Tips for Tuesday -Books: The Story Behind & On the Corner of Love and Hate

We may have been given one or more of the books below for free for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

 

Me - Today, I am recommending The Story Behind: The Extraordinary History Behind Ordinary Objects by Emily Prokop. Did you ever wonder where they came up  with the idea for the paper clip, roller skates, or the traffic light? If so, this book is for you. The book is based on the podcast, The Story Behind, and it tells about the origin and history of these and many other objects and types of technology. It also includes fun trivia about these things. If you are a person who likes to know how things came about, you will definitely enjoy this fascinating book.

Mom -Today, I am recommending On the Corner of Love and Hate by Nina Bocci. Emma and Cooper were childhood friends. At one time,she may even have been attracted to him, but it didn't work out and their friendship was never the same. Then, suddenly she finds herself the manager of his campaign for mayor and doing everything she can to keep all the old feelings from coming back. Emma and Cooper are a great couple. Right from the beginning, you can practically feel the sexual tension between them leaping off the pages of the book. You won't be able to wait for them to get together so you'll have to read the book all in one sitting.

Monthly Mashup for August, 2019 Scrunchies and The Aftermath of Moving

Me - My topic for this month is hair scrunchies. Lately, I have been really into them. My mom recently got a lot of them in different colors so I have been wearing them a lot. I especially like the silk ones because they look shiny. The colors in the packs my mom got are are really pretty. There are a lot of colors that are very similiar but no two are exactly the same. It is nice because it gives us a lot of varation of colors to choose from. If I wear two outfits in a row that have similar colors I can change things up by wearing a different scrunchie. Scrunchies are simple and yet fancy at the same time. They go with pretty much any outfit since they are not neccessarily fancy. Yet, you can  also use them in just about any hairstyle to make it a little bit fancier. They go with almost everything since they come in so many colors. They can also be used for other purposes besides putting them in your hair. For instance, you can wear them as bracelet or to keep something closed by putting one tightly around it. Scrunchies are great!

Mom - My topic for this month is the aftermath of moving . We recently moved. I actually have never been so happy to move in my life. I really hated where we used to lived.  While I do like our new home a lot better than our previous home, we are still in transition right now where we are really making our new place our home by unpacking and getting everything we need and don't have and figuring out where to put everything. I really hate that transition time. I just want to everything to be unpacked and to have everything we need and for it all to be where it belongs as if we had already lived here for years. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way especially because we need quite a lot of new things including some new furniture since there are things that need to be replaced and things that we didn't have in the first place because our previous home was smaller.  I wish we could take care of everything at once, but that is not possible either financially or timewise. However, right now it feels like it will take forever to get everything we need and put everything they way we want it to be. I hate that. I can't wait for all to be done. I will never be able to feel completely settled  in our new home until it is.

Latin Grammy-winning bilingual duo 123 Andrés returns to New York City on Sunday, September 1st to perform a benefit concert for Immigrant Families Together. The concert is at the Marlene Meyerson JCC at 334 Amsterdam Avenue, beginning at 10:30 am, and tickets are $18.

Immigrant Families Together helps reunite migrant families that have been separated at the border by paying for release bonds, legal services, and ongoing support. All proceeds from this show will help support the effort to bring families, separated at the border, back together. Learn more about their work.

123 Andrés consists of native Spanish-speakers Andrés Salguero and Christina Sanabria. They are known for high-energy, bilingual concerts with an interactive, theatrical style that gets kids and their grownups singing and dancing in Spanish and English. Announces 3rd Extension
UNMAKING TOULOUSE-LAUTREC
Now through October 30

Bated Breath Theatre Company announces a third extension of their acclaimed immersive, environmental production UNMAKING TOULOUSE-LAUTREC. Performances will now continue through October 30 at Madame X in Manhattan’s historic Greenwich Village, where it began on May 8.

UNMAKING TOULOUSE-LAUTREC invites you to discover the bohemian world of the Belle Epoque with Henri Toulouse-Lautrec—artist, aristocrat and all-around 19th Century bad boy. Dive into the underbelly of old Paris as you drink innovative house-made cocktails, lounge in a totally immersive Parisian-style salon, and rub shoulders with the dancers, prostitutes and outcasts that inspired the most enticing, elegant and provocative art depicting the decadence and sexuality of post-impressionist France.

Through dance, imagery, vignettes, and text, the production combines modern music and language while exploring the ecstasy of creativity and the agony of the body in the sexiest art history lesson you'll ever have.

Starting Friday, September 13th, UNMAKING TOULOUSE-LAUTREC runs alternating Fridays (7pm & 8:30pm) and Wednesdays (7pm & 9pm) through October 30. Running time is 60 minutes. Madame X is located at 94 West Houston Street, between LaGuardia Place and Thompson Street -- accessible from the B,D,F,M trains at Broadway/Lafayette.  Tickets are $45 and includes one complimentary beer, wine or specialty cocktail.
