I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Funtivity Friday - Science Experiment: Can We Build a Boat Out of Paper and/or Similar Materials That Will Float?

We wanted to see if we could make a boat out of household items like  paper and/or other similar materials that would actually float.

What we did:

1) First we made a list of potential materials to try

2) Then we made our boats out of:

1) Paper

2) Cardboard

3) Saran

4) Pipe cleaners and string

5) Tin Foil

Our results:

All of our boats sank. Maybe next time we'll try making a boat out of more than one material.

How would you make a boat out of household items that would actually float?

Enjoy!

Tune in tomorrow for a Saturday Special.

NYC Subway Art Tour and Fiorello

We were given a free NYC Subway Art tour for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Me - The NYC Subway Art Tour was different than any other tour I've been on. It was fun. We went around to different subway stations and looked at the artwork in the stations. In the 14th street station, they had all these little statutes of people and animals. They were cool! One was a squirrel holding a coin. Another was a person holding its own head as if its head had blown off. It all had to do with money and poor people and rich people. Another station had a wall of colorful tiles with Chinese symbols on them. That station also had teapots. The teapots all looked the same though.  One station's artwork had a circus theme. Another had some artworks that were like framed pictures behind glass. There was one station with small pictures of people carrying things. It was supposed to show people carrying on with life. There was a station with pictures of hats. They were real hats that had belonged to real  famous people, and the hats were as tall as they would be if the real people were wearing them. Another subway station had pictures of toys. It was a really interesting tour, and I would really suggest going.

We were given free tickets to Fiorello for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own based on viewing the show.
Me - Fiorello was interesting. I liked the show. It was about Fiorello La Guardia who was Mayor of New York  back in the 1930s and 1940s. I never heard of him before I saw show. The show was previously on Broadway before I was alive. The original Broadway show closed even before my Mom was born. I had never even heard of any of the songs before I saw the show. However, I remember  one where they spelled out La Guardia. It was a fun song. I don't remember the other songs. The show was informative. I learned a lot about Fiorello La Guardia. He seemed like a hardworker and helpful person. The acting was good. I did not have a favorite character.  The set was cool. They had buildings that they moved around. It looked kind of like a game board or something. It was a good show, and I am glad I saw it.
And that's Aurella's view. Tune in tomorrow for Funtivity Friday.

Where-To-Go Wednesday - NYC Subway Art Tour and Fiorello

Were given a free New York City Subway Art tour for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own based on our experience.
What: NYC Subway Art Tour

Where: Tour starts at McDonald's 51st and Broadway

Who:Teens and adults

Mom's view: If you like art, or history or if you just want to go on a really unique tour, you'll love the NYC Subway Art Tour led by Darryl Reilly. In 1985, a program was created to beautify New York City subway stations and since then gradually the stations have been renovated with beautiful works of art. There are currently over 400 subway stations and the process of renovating them is slow. Only a few are done a year. So there are still a good number of them awaiting renovation. On this tour, you will not see all of the renovated stations, but you will see a lot of them. You will see stations with very modern looking art. You will see stations with art that is based on classic literature. You will see stations with large murals and stations with art that is tiny. You will see stations that have more than one type of art in the same station. You will stations with art that looks like something really and stations with art that doesn't. There is even one station where all the artwork is pictures of hats. Between all the interesting information you will learn on this tour and all the beautiful artwork you will see, the approximately two hour tour will feel like it goes by in a flash. We would not recommend this tour for young children. They might enjoy riding around on the subways but they would probably get bored with viewing and learning about the art. However, if your child is a little older and they particularly enjoy art and/or history they might enjoy it. For more information or to book a tour go to http://nycsubwaytour.com/. For an interview with Darryl Reilly see this week's upcoming Saturday Special.

We were given free tickets to Fiorello for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own based on our viewing of the show.

What: Fiorello

Where: Classic Stage Company
             136 E. 13th St.
             New York , NY

Who: Recommended for 16 and up

When: Now through October 7, 2016
Mom's view: Fiorello is a classic musical that is not often revived. The current revival was so popular in its initial run at the Unicorn Theatre in Stockbridge, Massachusetts that it was moved Off-Broadway for an extended run. While the show, unlike most classic musicals ,does not have one memorable song, the story regarding the late former mayor of New York City, Fiorello LaGuardia is a good one. It is nice to have the opportunity to learn more about him than that he was the man an airport, a high school of performing arts and various other locations were named after. If you nothing about him, once you see the show, not only will you understand why so many places were named after him, you'll wonder why even more locations weren't named after him, and why younger generations including my own know so little about him. This particular production is quite a a good one. The acting and singing are all very good, Every performer is well cast and performs well in his or her role. The set is very interesting with large replicas of New York City locations being moved around it like giant chess pieces. It may sound like this would be distracting but it really isn't. I wouldn't recommend the show for young kids due to some language and situations although none of it is really that bad compared to what is in most PG or at least PG 13 rated movies today. However, the story probably wouldn't interest young children anyway, For more information or to order tickets go to http://www.berkshiretheatregroup.org/on-our-stages/theatre/619-fiorello-2. Keep in mind the show will only be running through October 7,
And that's Mom's view. Tune in tomorrow for more about NYC Subway Art Tour and Fiorello.

Tips for Tuesday - Misc. : Cadbury Chocolate, Keysocks and EnduraCool

We may have been given some products mentioned below for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own based on our experience with the prodcuts

Me - Today I am recommending Cadbury chocolate. Cadbury chocolate is delicious! The way they make it makes it taste like there is a little caramel hidden in the chocolate. It is one of the best chocolates there is. I love the chocolate bunnies and the Curly Wurly bars. Unfortunately, if you live in the U.S., you cannot get Curley Wurly bars in the store, you have to order them.  Curly Wurly  bars are a mixture of caramel and chocolate in a long thin bar. They are really scrumptious. Cadbury chocolate is one of the best candies ever!

Mom - Today I am recommending a couple of products that can either help warm you up or cool you down:

The first is Keysocks. Keysocks are like ped socks but instead of only going around your foot they go all the way up to the knee. They are very soft and comfortable, and they can serve many purposes. They can be used either to warm you up or to cool you down. If you are going some place and socks don't fit with your outfit or thick socks won't fit in your shoes but you're afraid your legs might get cold like out on the water, you can wear them to keep your legs warmer. In the winter time, If you have heavy boots, and your legs get really hot inside them, you can wear them to keep your feet cooler.
The second product will keep you cool. It is MISSION Athletecare’s EnduraCool towels. These towels are made with a special cooling technology that instantly cools you down when they are wet. They can be used in many ways. They are great for athletes who need to cool down after a workout. They are perfect for cooling down kids when they have been outside on a hot day. We even like to take them with us when we are travelling. Aside from towels, EnduraCool also comes in hats, headbands and other products.  These products are such a great and easy way to keep from overheating that they have even been used by professional athletes like Carli Lloyd, Serena Williams, and Drew Brees.

And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.

Monthly Mash-up for September, 2016 DVD Commentaries and Living in a Post 9/11 World

Me  - My topic for this month is commentaries on DVDs and Blu Rays. When I was little, I didn't used to like commentaries because I thought they were boring. I never used to listen to them.  Now, I love them, and I think they are so interesting. It so cool to be able to listen to them and learn a bunch of things about what I watched and how it was to film it. Commentaries are one of the most interesting things about watching a DVD now. I get disappointed when a disc doesn't have a commentary, and  I don't get to learn more about the episode or movie I just watched. Commentaries are so much fun to listen to. I really enjoy them.

Mom - My topic for this month is the post 9/11 world. I don't want to live in a post 9/11 world anymore. I mean don't get me wrong if the alternative is death, I don't want that either. I am not one of those people who is so nostalgic for the days when I grew up that I remember them as perfect, carefree and innocent either. Bad things happened back then to. I remember being a kid and seeing pictures of missing child, Eitan Patz on buses. However, it wasn't like it is now where it can literally be scary to go anywhere in public because you just don't know what is going to happen. My daughter and I were in New York, the day of the most recent bombing. We were nowhere near the location of the bomb at the time of the blast and thankfully nobody died in that blast, but it is still scary. I mean terrorist bombings used to be things that happened far away in the Mideast not in places like Paris and Brussels and certainly not in America. When I went to Israel twice in my teens there was always a really sense of having to be alert at all times because you never knew what was going to happen there. I liked that it wasn't like that here. I don't like that it is now. So am I going to hide away in my house or at least stop going to places that are likely to be high target areas like New York City? No, of course, not because we let the terrorists win if  let fear control our lives. We have to keep going where we want to go and doing what we want to do and living the lives we want to live and keep the fear in the back of our minds at least that is how I want to live my my life.

And that's our view. What's on your mind?

Tune in tomorrow for another Tips for Tuesday.

Neil Simon's Jakes Women
Friday September 30 - Sunday October 9, 2016

Maurer Productions OnStage presents a foray into the world of modern relationships by the master comic playwright Neil Simon. Jake, a struggling novelist, handles the world in his imagination much better than that pesky real one just outside his study, where the shadow of a failing marriage looms large. Prompted into both real and imagined conversations with the ladies in his life, Jake finds his wildly comic and sometimes moving flashbacks are occasionally interrupted by visitations from actual females.

South Street Seaport Museum
announces
Archtober 2016 at the Seaport Museum
and a special accompanying exhibition
The Architecture of Trade
October 2016

The South Street Seaport Museum announces Archtober 2016 at the Seaport Museum, a series of special walking and sailing tours celebrating the architecture of the Seaport District and Schermerhorn Row. Presented in association with Archtober, Architecture and Design Month New York City, and in honor of Schermerhorn Row's selection as Archtober Building of the Day on Monday, October 10, 2016, the Seaport Museum announces the opening of its new special exhibition The Architecture of Trade: Schermerhorn Row and the Seaport. The exhibition is presented in two parts, in the museum's mezzanine level and fourth floor galleries at 12 Fulton Street.

The Architecture of Trade: Schermerhorn Row and the Seaportexamines the life of Schermerhorn Row, Manhattan's only surviving row of Federal style merchant counting houses, and its place in the Seaport at South Street through the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as its connection to New York's enduring urban evolution. What happened on South Street ignited New York's transformation from a provincial trading town into a global metropolis. The architecture of Schermerhorn Row traces this dramatic change.

The exhibition in the mezzanine area, accessible from the main entrance of the Seaport Museum on 12 Fulton Street, is dedicated to Schermerhorn Row's more recent history in the 20th century. Using photographs and documents, the exhibition follows the story of Schermerhorn Row and the Seaport as they were rescued by preservationists from certain demolition, and covers the Row's early restorations starting in the 1970s.

By limited tour only, the fourth floor galleries of Schermerhorn Row will be opened to explore the 19th century portion of the exhibition. Here, Schermerhorn Row's early life is covered, from its very beginning as a real estate investment in an era of booming maritime trade on the East River, to its changing circumstances in the late 19th century as the Seaport declined in commercial significance. This story is told through artifacts from the collection, architectural elements, and the building itself. Within Schermerhorn Row are the preserved remains of rooms abandoned in the early 20th century.

Due to the fragile nature of the preserved rooms and the need to climb several flights of stairs, entry to the fourth floor exhibition will be limited. Access will be through an exclusive guided tour only. Tours will be available twice a month.  Tour tickets are $15 ($10 for Museum members), and must be purchased in addition to general admission. Please note that this portion of the exhibition requires climbing four flights of stairs. For accessibility accommodations please contact the Museum at 212-748-8700. For more information, to check tour availability, or to reserve tickets, visit www.southstreetseaportmuseum.org.

The 20th century section of the exhibition, located on the mezzanine level, is included in general admission. Admission is free for Museum Members. Non-member tickets are $12 for adults; $8 for seniors (65+), Merchant Mariners, Active Duty Military, teachers, and students (all with valid ID); $6 for kids (ages 6-17) and free for children ages 5 and under. For more information or to reserve tickets, visit www.southstreetseaportmuseum.org.

Over the next two centuries Schermerhorn Row hosted various businesses including restaurants and hotels. OCTOBER 3-29, 2016

PREMIERES (Paulette Haupt, Artistic Director), the New York based music theater organization whose mission is “to bring new music theater to light,” is pleased to announce the complete cast and creative teams for this season’s Inner Voices, the biannual series of solo works featuring new teams of playwrights and composers. Performances will begin on Monday, October 3rd at 8:00pm (and continue through October 29) atThe TBG Theatre (312 West 36th Street – between 8th & 9th Avenues).  Opening Night is Thursday, October 13th at 8:00pm.

In Just One “Q”, Bertha and Julynne, bitter enemies, duke it out at the Broadbend Nursing Home in Arkansas over a game of scrabble.  Benny (T. Oliver Reid), an orderly, narrates the history of their acrimonious relationship.  Chaos, humor and closure abound in this amusing and tuneful musical. Words by Ellen Fitzhugh, music by Ted Shen with musical direction by Andrew Resnick.  Directed by Brad Rouse.
In The Pen, an everyday morning becomes everything but when a seemingly innocuous obstacle shatters Laura's  (Nancy Anderson) routine and threatens her prompt arrival to work.  Ghosts of the past collide with present day demons as she struggles to rise above her compulsion and leave her apartment. Words by Dan Collins, music by Julianne Wick Davis with musical direction by Alexander Rovang.  Directed by Margot Bordelon.

In The Booty Call, a young man (Michael Thurber) receives a booty call while creating a demo of his recent compositions.  The call sends him off on an existential musing of his past experiences with love and intimacy, shedding an honest light on the seldom-observed reflections of a late 20’s male living the single life in New York City. Words by Saheem Ali, music by Michael Thurber.  Mr. Saheem directs.

'MAKE A CIRCLE'

with

JENNIFER PASKOW

A Celebration of Life, Love & Connection
for Children & their Families

Make A Circle leads off by showcasing Jennifer Paskow's rich, honeyed voice on "Make A Circle," whose central message is to extend your love to others by learning to love yourself.  "On The Inside," an anthem to self-esteem, encourages young people to look within to discover their intrinsic value.

"I Am A Tree" connects us to one another and Mother Earth by presenting the metaphor of a tree connecting to the earth as an emblem of the oneness of all things, while "Celebrate This Day" urges physical movement to express the sheer joy of life. Continuing the celebration theme, Jennifer Paskow's version of "This Little Light of Mine" is a manifestation of traditional hand-clapping gospel exuberance.

Celestial bodies receive their due in the wrap-up of this beautiful album.  The soothing sounds of "Hello Moon" depict the wonder of being connected to nature and the universe, while "Long Time Sun" is an Irish blessing that Jennifer Paskow sings at the end of every children's yoga class she teaches

Make A Circle will be available on iTunes, Amazon, and CDBaby.

EAR SNACKS: SONGS FROM THE PODCAST

by

ANDREW & POLLY

Meet Andrew and Polly, award-winning music makers and hosts of Ear Snacks, a radical new podcast for kids. Andrew & Polly's new album of quirky, eclectic and fun tunes embedded in brisk, brainy repartee, Ear Snacks: Songs from the Podcast, will be released on September 30th.

The first season of the podcast -- over seven hours of free content for children and their families -- includes interviews with more than 60 kids and 35 adult experts along with an original score and a slew of genre-busting Andrew & Polly songs.  Now the duo presents a selection of music from the first season, re-contextualized on Ear Snacks: Songs from the Podcast.  The album of fourteen expertly produced tunes ranges from introspective and insightful to anthemic and absurd, delivering addictive earworms and surprises around every corner,

Ear Snacks: Songs from the Podcast kicks off with "Dancing Pants," based on the true-to-life tale of a pair of pants that were so incredibly sparkly they needed their own horn section.  "Dancing Pants" featuresAndrew & Polly's L.A. neighbor, the incomparable Mista Cookie Jar, whose rap makes the song "next level cuckoo."

A photo that Polly Hall took of a miniature toy stegosaurus with a fierce shadow became the inspiration for "Tiny Dino," produced as if Simon & Garfunkel, with a little help from Toto, had written the theme song to a Saturday morning cartoon of thirty years ago.

Other highlights include "Grapes," the SiriusXM Kids Place Live chart topper from the very first episode of Ear Snacks, and "How Can You Tell If It's Going to Rain?" which offers a '60s ethos updated for the third millennium.

Ear Snacks: Songs from the Podcast will be available at CDBaby, Amazon, at Andrew & Polly's website - www.andrewandpolly.com - and at their shows.
