Where-To-Go Wednesday

Where-To-Go Wednesday is closed this week.

Dr. Suess

Me - Dr. Seuss, wow! When I was little I used to read Dr. Seuss' books. I owned a lot of them. Now, my sister owns a lot of them because I handed them down to her. I don't own any. I still like to read them with her. I don't like that Dr. Seuss makes up a lot of words in his books. They are supposed to be books for children to read. The big words make them hard, and they make no sense. Even when the books are being read the big words make them hard to understand. I always especially liked There's a Wocket in My Pocket even though almost every single  word in that book is made up. When I was little, I used to read that book all the time. I would pretend that all the things were in my house too. I didn't like that the book was called There's a Wocket in My Pocket but in the book there was no wocket in his pocket. I like that all Dr. Seuss books teach kids things in a fun way. When I was little I saw part of the Dr. Seuss live Cat in the Hat movie. It scared me. I like the cartoon The Grinch that Stole Christmas. I really love Dr. Seuss.

Mom - Dr. Seuss, who doesn't like Dr. Seuss or didn't at one time at least. His books are so much fun. They are also mostly easy to read. I know many kids who learned how to read partly with the help of Dr. Suess books. Right now, Aurella is one of them. The only thing that makes Dr. Seuss books a little bit hard to read is all the made up words about made up creatures and things. That is one thing I don't like about Dr. Suess books. I don't like all those made up words. I also don't like the live action Dr. Seuss movies although The Grinch That Stole Christmas was better than The Cat in The Hat.I like the animated movies though especially the Lorax one. I love when the bad guy starts singing "Let It Die. Let is Die. Let it Shrivel Up and Die." and everyone else just stops singing and looks at him. I would have to say my favorite Dr. Seuss book is probably Green Eggs and Ham. I also really like The Cat and the Hat. I also like The Grinch That Stole Christmas. I love the cartoon version movie of it as well. There are so many good Dr. Seuss books really. I'm sure there are many more good ones that  I am not even aware of. Dr. Seuss wrote so many books. Even though I have read a lot of them when I was a kid or now with my own kids, I am sure there are so many more Dr. Seuss books out there that I never read and/or never even heard of. Every year in schools and in libraries they celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday. That sounds like a lot of fun. I wish they would have done that when I was in school.

And that's our view. What is your favorite Dr. Seuss book?

Tips for Tuesday - Books: Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz and Summer Rental

Me - Today I am recommending Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz. It is one of Frank L. Baum's sequels to The Wizard of Oz. It is a really good book. In this book, Dorothy is visiting her cousin, Zeb in California, they fall through the earth during an earthquake and meet up with the Wizard in Oz. Anyone who loves The Wizard of Oz will probably like this book.

Mom - Today I am recommending Summer Rental by Mary Kay Andrews. Summer Rental is a book about three best friends and the stranger who enters their lives one summer as they all share a house. If you like chick lit and your are looking for a well paced entertaining fast read, this book is a good choice in any season. And that's our view.

Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.

Playing An Instrument

Me - Playing an instrument, wow. I played the saxophone. My Dad always got mad because I never practiced. I wanted to play the guitar. I can play Don't Stop Believin' on the guitar. My cousin taught me it. I would also like to play the piano. We have  a piano but nobody really plays it that much. My Dad keeps saying some day, he will get me lessons but so far he hasn't. I can play Three Blind Mice and a little bit of Do Re Mi from The Sound of Music on the piano though. Also, I can play a scale. I also have a harmonica. I can make a train sound on it, but I can't play any songs on it. I can play pretty much anything you can think of on a kazoo. I got my kazoo as a summer reading prize. My saxophone used to be my brother's. He was pretty good at the saxophone but he gave it up. Before, that he played trumpet, he was terrible at that. My Dad doesn't think I can stick with anything because I kept saying I want to quit saxophone and I finally did. He had said that if I proved that I could stick with something, by continuing to play the saxophone for the whole next school year, and actually practicing it, he would maybe let me take gymnastics. I planned on continuing to play the saxophone for at least another year and practicing for at least ten minutes a day. Ten minutes a day is what my school recommends, and I really didn't think it was that much, is it? It is! I hated it, and I don't play the saxophone anymore.

Mom - When I was young, I took piano lessons for two or three years. I didn't mind playing, but I hated practicing. However, I practiced when I had to. I was never a great player, but I was okay.I had friends who played much better than I. When I was in 4th grade, I joined the band. I decided to play the flute. I could never really play that so my band teacher suggested I switch to a different instrument. I chose the clarinet. I could never really play that so my band teacher suggested I switch to a different instrument again. I chose the bells. I wasn't bad at that. I mean how hard can it be, the instrument says the notes right on it, and all you have to do is hit them with a little stick. However, the whole year and changing instruments two times was too much for me and after 4th grade I stopped playing bells too, and I never joined the school band again. I mean despite everything I enjoyed my year in the band. The band teacher was a really great guy super supportive and super nice even when he had to tell you that you should really change instruments because the one you were playing was really not for you. My stepson played the trumpet in the band. He was terrible the sounds he made with that instrument never came close to sounding like music. However, his band teacher never said anything to him or my husband and I until we specifically asked him about it. Then, he admitted maybe trumpet wasn't the instrument for my stepson and that maybe he should try something else. My stepson next took up the saxophone. He was a good saxophone player, but eventually gave that up too because, he didn't like to practice, and besides, he has never been known to stick with anything. Last year, Melia has took up the saxophone. She was not bad, but she didn't stick with it long enough to get to the level that my stepson was at before he gave it up, and she did not like to practice much either. She talked about practicing a lot, but did not do it so much. I kind of feel like sometimes she did not practice because she did not think she played well enough and that's why she gave it up. However,  she did not realize that in order to play better you need to practice. As for me, after fourth grade, I quit the school band, but I still played piano. After fifth grade, we moved. I never got a new piano teacher, and I never took lessons again. I never really played anymore either, and that was the end of my instrument playing.

And that's our view. What instrument do you play or would you like to have played?

Funny Friday - I'll Take Care of You

Me-

My sister was playing Animal Vet on her DS and she said the animals were under her carement.

Mom -

Aurella liked to play this game where she pretended Daddy was her son Bathtub and Mommy was her daughter Shower. Sometimes, Melia would play too and be her other daughter either named Pool or Hot Tub.

We welcome you to share your funny stories with us. Tune in Monday for another Talking Topic.

Award Shows

Me -  Award shows, wow! I like award shows. I like to look at the clothes that everyone is wearing. I like the Oscars because I like to see what movies win the awards. I like to see what is nominated even though I haven't seen most of the movies usually. The Grammys I like to see what songs are nominated. Also, I like to see the live performances. I like the Emmys because I like to see which shows are up for awards. I like to see if any of the shows I watch win any awards. I like the Tonys because I like to see the performances from the shows. I like the Golden Globes. The Golden Globes are special to me. The Golden Globe was the first topic we ever blogged about, and here we are more than two years later.

Mom - I like the Oscars because I like to look at the clothes and see if I can guess who is going to win the awards. I very often haven't seen most of the movies that are nominated for awards. I like the Grammys if I like the songs that are performed on the show. It is mostly about the performances anyway. They hardly given any awards away on the show any more. Lately, I usually know most songs from hearing them performed on Glee and not from hearing them sung by the original artists. Now, that I have given up Glee, I will probably not know as many current songs so I will probably not have much interest in the Grammys. I like the Emmys only if shows I watch are nominated for awards. Lately, Modern Family always wins all the comedy awards. That doesn't interest me so much because I don't watch that. I like the performances from the nominated shows on the Tony Awards too. I like the Golden Globes because they have separate categories for dramas and comedies or musicals for movies too and not just for TV shows. I wish it was that way at the Oscars too. I really love a good drama but some comedies and the actors in them are equally as good, but they hardly ever win. That is the problem with awards. It is all subjective.

And that's our view. What is your favorite awards show?

Where-To-Go Wednesday - Medieval Times

What: Medieval Times

Where: Various Locations

Who: All Ages

Our view: Medieval Times has something for everyone. Boys will enjoy the jousting. Girls will enjoy the beautiful princesses especially those girls that are into Disney Princesses. Very young children might get scared or bored, however. If you cannot ever see yourself eating without benefit of utensils, this is not the place for you. Children especially young children will probably enjoy the opportunity to do so without being hassled about it for a change. The food is actually pretty good. The show is entertaining although after a while it gets old unless you are really in to that sort of thing. Be aware that the people at Medieval Times excel at merchandising and could probably give the Disney people a run for their money. In the holding area where you walk in and wait for your groups turn to go into the show, there is a ton of merchandise on sale. The merchandise will be sure to attract all the children in your party as they range from wooden shields and swords to princess hats and crowns among other items. Tickets for Medieval Times are quite pricey at  $59.95 for adults and $35.95 for kids 12 and under and that doesn't even include tax and processing fees which are required nor does it include gratuities to your food server. Check the web-site for special offers. Currently, there is a special offer for $20.00 off an adult ticket and $10.00 off a child's ticket which makes it a little more affordable. I am not sure how long that particular special has been running or how long it will continue to run. Children under 3 are free at all times, but will be required to sit on someone's lap. For more information or to make reservations go to medievaltimes.com.

Tips for Tuesday - Apps and Web-sites: Super Penguins and Creations Rewards

Me - Today I am recommending Super Penguins. It is  a really really fun game. It is a game that can go on forever. You unlock different penguins using fish. Fish are like money in the game. You play a game with the penguins to get points. It is kind of like an obstacle course. It is a great game.

Mom - Today I am recommending creations rewards where you can earn points for shopping, filling out surveys, watching videos, visiting web-sites and answering trivia among other things. You can even get points just for completing a check-list of activities every day. Points can be traded in for gift cards, Amazon codes, paypal or paper checks. For more information or to sign up for an account go to creationsrewards.net.

Laurie Berkner

Me - Laurie Berkner, wow! When I was little I loved Laurie Berkner. I had all her CDs. I also went to three Laurie Berkner concerts. I also had one Laurie Berkner DVD. My sister has them all now as well as another CD and two other DVDs. My favorite song was Boots. I used to sing it all the time. Whenever I listened to it, I had to get out all my boots. I also liked The Goldfish Song that talked about fish doing human things and then said wait a minute fish don't do that. I also liked Pig on Your Head and We Are the Dinosaurs.I still like her version of Fly Me to the Moon. Both my Mom and I still have that song on our MP3s because we like it so much. The reason I got into Laurie Berkner was I used to listen to the same Barney CD over and over again. My parents got sick of it. They introduced me to Laurie Berkner who sang songs on Noggin before it became Nick Jr. My Mom said "It it's so great on TV imagine what a whole CD would be like." That was where it all started and our whole family was hooked. Then, we got our friends hooked on Laurie Berkner. They won a contest and got to video chat with Laurie all because of us. We were jealous although now I don't care. They live in another state. So if you have a little kid in your house, you and your kid should trying listening to Laurie Berkner. I think you'll be hooked too.

Mom - When Melia was little, she went through a phase where she was always listening to the same Barney CD. It was driving me crazy so I convinced her that she should try some other music. At the time, the TV channel that is now Nick Jr. was called Noggin. Between shows they sometimes played music. That is where we first heard Laurie Berkner's music. She had fun songs like Pig On Your Head and We Are the Dinosaurs. I convinced Melia that if the few Laurie Berkner songs we'd heard on TV were so good, imagine what a whole Laurie Berkner CD would be like. She agreed and we purchased our first Laurie Berkner CD, Whaddya Think of That. Immediately our whole family was hooked. We would subsequently own every Laurie Berkner CD  as well as attending several Laurie Berkner concerts. I have to say that those concerts were some of the most of fun concerts I ever attended in my life. They were really upbeat and lively. Most of the adults seemed to be having as much fun as the children. Laurie Berkner songs are just so much fun that it is hard to get sick of them. It is great to listen to them on the CD, but it is even better to hear them in person and be able to sing along with Laurie and her band. We even got our friends hooked on Laurie Berkner and my girls were jealous out of their minds when one of those friends won a contest and was able to have a live video chat with Laurie Berkner. We were able to see a copy of the video chat and he and his family even got to sing along with Laurie to some of her songs. That really drove my girls crazy with jealousy. Of course, not everyone can get a private video chat with Laurie Berkner. However, anyone can go to one of her concerts, and if you ever have the opportunity and you have young children, I would highly recommend it. Laurie will be appearing in the Philadelphia/Glenside area at the Keswick Theater on February 23 at 11:00 AM. For additional concert times, dates and locations see her web-site at laurieberkner.com.

And that's our view. Who is or was your favorite children's performer?

Funny Friday - Baby, Baby

Me -

When I was little I thought six babies were called sexlets.

Mom -

Aurella was playing with her dolls and pretending to be pregnant. "Soon I'm going to be borning another baby." she said.

Valentine's Day

Me - Valentine's Day, wow! I like Valentine's Day. For Valentine's Day, I get cards for my Mom and Dad and my sister. I don't really have a boyfriend to get a card for and Valentine's Day isn't really romantic for me. When we were younger, we gave each other cards in school. Then, you have to give cards to everybody even people you don't like. In third and fourth grade, I refused to give out Valentine's because I really hated this boy in my class and didn't want to give him a card. I still don't like that boy, but he hasn't been in my class for a while. My parents and my sister and sometimes my grandparents always give me a card. My parents always give me a little gift or some candy too. Sometimes, they give me candy and a gift. I like gifts. They are usually stuffed animals. They are usually really cute too. One year, I got a stuffed bear. I still have it. I love Valentine's Day!

Mom - When I was young, once or twice, my Mom and Dad got us gifts for Valentine's Day, and they always gave us cards. Of course, we always gave cards to each other in school too at least until we got to Middle School. Sometimes, when I was older and particularly down on men, my best friend and I would go see man bashing movies for Valentine's Day. However, Valentine's Day was never as meaningful  to me as it has been since I have been with my husband. We always exchange cards and gifts. We don't always get to go out though. Sometimes, when we don't get to go out, we at least put the kids to bed and then have dinner by ourselves. My husband never gives me flowers because he's allergic to them. Sometimes, he gives me chocolate, and I usually give him chocolate. I love chocolate, but these days I am trying not to eat fattening things as much. I am not always very successful at this because I am a chocoholic, and I have an extreme sweet tooth. I always give my kids cards and little gifts for Valentine's Day too. I used to get them candy, but I am trying to stay away from that now. The last couple years I have gotten them little stuffed animals instead. They love that. They would like it if every holiday was a gift giving occasion. I would like it every holiday was as peaceful and happy as Valentine's Day usually is.

And that's our view. What is your favorite thing to get or give for Valentine's Day?

Where-To-Go Wednesday - American Girl

 What: American Girl

Where: Various Locations

Who: Girls of all ages

Our view: American Girl  is a little girls dream. Where else can you find a multi-level store filled to the brim with dolls, their clothes and accessories and books about them . Girls can have their dolls repaired or have their doll's hair done or have their doll's pictures taken among other things.  There is even a restaurant where girls can eat with their dolls and the food is actually quite tasty. It is like a whole world for dolls and the girls that love them. The upside of American Girl is it promotes learning because each doll comes from a different place and time and each doll has a line of books associated with her so girls can learn about what life was like for girls throughout different periods of history through the dolls. The downside is that the dolls, clothes and accessories are all very pricey. A single doll and book costs $110.00. Other dolls called Bitty Babies are also available. Bitty Babies are only $55.00 but they do not have a line of books or as many clothes or accessories available for them although they do have some clothes and accessories available for them. Also, Bitty Babies are just generic. They are not associated with a specific place or time nor do they come with names and histories like other American Girl dolls do. American Girl holds special events for girls 8 and up, such as, crafts, scavenger hunts, and pampering sessions in the Doll Hair Care Salon to learn tips for taking care of the dolls at home. Some events require reservations, other do not. Birthday parties are also available. Please note, if you wish to eat in the cafe, you must make a reservation as dining is only offered at specific times and the restaurant is quite popular. See the web-site or check with the American Girl location you plan to visit for the meals and times available. Please also note that while you don't have to own or buy an American Girl doll to go to American Girl Place rarely if ever do you see a girl in the place without one so if your daughter does not have one and/or you do not intend to get her one, knowing how every little girl wants what other little girls have, it is probably best to take your daughter some place else. For more information on American Girl; to shop for American Girl dolls, clothes, accessories and or books and/or to find about a specific American Girl location or to make a reservation go to a specific American Girl location go to americangirl.com.

Tips for Tuesday - Misc.: Target and Five Guys Burgers and Fries

Me - Today I am recommending Target. It is one of my favorite stores. We are always there it's like our home away from home. They have almost anything you could want there and the prices are good. We even get our pictures in the photo studio there. It's a real great store.

Mom - Today I am recommending Five Guys Burger and Fries. If you like burgers and or fries and especially if you like burgers and fries, this is the place for you. A lot of places have great burgers. A lot of places have great fries. It is hard to find a place that has great burgers and great fries. Five Guys Burgers and Fries is that place. The burgers and fries are both delicious, and I would highly recommend it.

And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.

American Girl

Me -American Girl, wow! I have been to American Girl twice. I went for my birthday once with my Mom, Dad, sister, Grandma, Aunt and cousin. I got two American Girls, Rebecca and Molly. My sister and my cousin got Bitty Babies. We had tea in the cafe. The second time I went with my Girl Scout troop. I didn't get another American Girl. I did have Rebecca's hair done. I wanted to take Molly with me instead, but I couldn't find her. That time I ate spaghetti and meatballs. It was so good. Also, I drank pink lemonade for the first time. I would like to get another American Girl doll. I would like to get Julie. I always wanted Samantha too, but they don't make her any more. I used to have a  bunch of American Girl movies, but I don't any more. I don't really read the American Girl books that much. I haven't even read the ones that were about my dolls. I really like the American Girl store. Maybe, some day I'll go back and eat their spaghetti again. It is really good spaghetti.

Mom - Before I had kids, one summer, my husband and I went to Chicago. It seemed like every little girl in Chicago walked around with an American Girl bag. I longed for a little girl of my own that I could take to American Girl. A few years later not only did I have two little girls of my own, but there was an American Girl a lot closer to home in New York City. We first went there for one of Melia's birthdays. My Mom, my sister, and my niece went with us. American Girl is a dream come true for little girls, full of dolls, doll clothes and accessories. We got Melia two American Girls and Aurella and my niece each a Bitty Baby.  The girls got to have tea with their new dolls. Tea included cinnamon buns, sandwichs, and cookies among other things.  The food was really good. A few years later, Melia and I went to American Girl again with her Girl Scout troop. This time Melia had her American Girl's hair done. We had dinner. The food was equally as good. We both had spaghetti with cheese filled meatballs. I loved going to American Girl with my daughters, but I wish they would have had it when I was a kid.

And that's our view. What is some place special that you've been or you would like to go with your kids?

Tune in tomorrow for Tips for Tuesday. For more about American Girl see this Wednesday's Where-To-Go Wednesday.

Funny Friday - Hands Off! He's mine!

Me - When I was little I said "I'm going to go walk with my daddy."

          Mom said, "He's your daddy?"

         Me: "Yes."

Mom: "Oh, I thought he was my daddy."

Me: "Okay, we can share him.

Mom - One day Aurella said "I miss my Jack."

"Why is he your Jack?" I asked.

"He's not your Jack. He's mine and Melia's." she replied.

We welcome you to share your funny stories with us.

Nashville

Me- Nashville, wow! I really love Nashville. It is a great show. There are great characters and great stories. I love the storylines. Some of my favorite characters are Rayna, Deacon and Scarlet. Scarlet is so innocent. I also like Rayna's daughters especially the younger one who is really cute. I don't like Teddy, Rayna's husband. I also don't like Peggy. I thought that Sean was really good for Juliet. He deserves someone better though. I don't like Rayna's father. I am sure that he did something to fix the election though. I am glad that he is not my father. I don't like Scarlet's ex. I think she should get together with her song-writing partner, Gunnar. Gunnar's ex-girlfriend, Hayley is pretty, but I would rather see him with Scarlet even though I am pretty sure that is not going to happen. I love the music from the show. We are downloading some of the songs and getting the album. I can't wait! My favorite songs are Telescope and Wrong Song. I really love Nashville and I can't wait to see it every week and see what is going to happen next.

Mom- One of my favorite new shows is Nashville. The plots are mostly interesting. I find myself eagerly looking forward to what is going to happen from week to week. The characters are interesting. Most of them are not all black and white. They have shades of good and bad to their characters.   My favorite characters are Rayna James, the established star, Deacon, her ex and fellow band-mate, and Scarlet, the up and coming song writer. However, the best part of the show is the music. While I don't love every song. I do like a lot of them and find myself wanting to hear them again. I can't wait to get the soundtrack. Nashville is everything that I thought Smash would be, but it wasn't. When I heard about Smash, I couldn't wait to see it. I am a big fan of Broadway theater and have seen many Broadway shows myself. At first though, I couldn't really get into it. I continued to watch and grew to like it by the end of the season. However, I still don't love it. I love show music too and have many soundtracks. However, the music from Smash for the most part didn't really grab me either. There are songs I like, but I am not sure if there are enough of them to bother purchasing the soundtrack. There are none that I feel like I can't wait to hear again. So far I haven't purchased it. I have heard that there are lot of changes in store for Smash this year. I'm glad to hear that. Maybe, it will become the show I was expecting in the first place. Maybe, it will become a must watch show that I will look forward to watching every week like I do Nashville.

And that's our view. Do you prefer Smash or Nashville or neither?

Target

Me - Target, wow! I love Target. Target has everything. We are there like every day. My sister and I  love to spend our money there. They have a good selection of DVDs and video games. We always like to check out the dollar section. Lately, Aurella is into glow sticks and slinkies and Target has them at the dollar section. Target always has Ritz bits in a big cup for a $1.00. That is my favorite snack. I also get gum there. My favorite gum is Trident. Actually, Trident pink bubble gum is the only gum I chew. I use to get a lot of clothes at Target, but now I usually get most of my clothes at Kohls and Justice. I still like Target clothes though too. I like the D-signed brand of Disney clothes. We get our pictures taken at Target too. We have since I was little. My sister and I really love the woman who works there now. The people are always changing a lot though. We are afraid we will go there, and she will not be there anymore. That will make us sad. In general though, shopping at Target makes us happy. Target is a very great store!

Mom - We love Target. It is one of our favorite stores. We shop there all the time. We go there at least once a week if not more. We are always joking around that it is our home away from home. We go there more than we go to my mother's house and she only lives about 20 minutes away. We buy clothes there. We buy shoes there. We buy toys there. We buy cards there. We buy CDs and video games there. You name it, and we probably have bought it at Target at one time or another. We also get our prescriptions from their pharmacy and have all our pictures taken in their photo studio. The photo studio is not directly run by Target, but they are great. The prices are really reasonable and even though the staff is always changing they always seem to have people working there who are really good photographers. I hate going to a photography studio and being asked too many questions right down to how we want to be posed. I like a photographer that just asks the basic questions but has a good idea of what makes a good picture and how to pose people. I have always been pleased with our Target pictures. Just as I have always been pleased with Target.

And that's our view. What is your favorite store?
